DOOM 3 Beta Patch - SDK & Demo Soon

Robert Duffy's .plan has word that a beta DOOM 3 patch has been released at Shacknews (registration required) to get some testing of the first update for the game. The patch includes a bunch of updates including enhanced support for widescreen monitors and some bug fixes, while word is a future patch will incorporate PunkBuster anti-cheating support. The .plan update also says the SDK will accompany the non-beta version of the patch, and word that the DOOM 3 demo is due soon, as well, offering three levels of single-player gameplay. Update: Apparently this is not an exclusive, and mirrors of the download are now available from 3D Gamers, Gamer's Hell, OzForces, and Worthplayting.

Punkbuster was POS, and is the major factor for me to stop playing Q3A CTF.

Not only would people still cheat, but I ended up getting bounced out of almost every game I joined.

Adding PB to a game is as good as sending it to the grave.

Maybe if you bought Quake3 and had a legal copy, you wouldn't have problems with it. I run a server and it drives me nuts to have people constantly emailing me "I can't play on your server because Punkbuster won't let me because I'm using someone else's key (or) because I'm using a no-cd crack."

Get a job

I personally found Doom3 to be the most fun I had in years, couldn't stop playing it although it dragged a bit in the end, and I love multiplayer. Too bad people really haven't picked it up for mods, some amazing stuff could be done (and the 4 player limit is nothing before the trolls come out)

I believe the command you want is r_lightscale too.

Whoever thought of public beta patches is stupid
no really, who would want several million people to do more in a day than their QA team of 5-10 could do in years /sarc

PB is the only reason Quake 3 still lives to day.

Big waste of $60 for budget level gaming in my opinion. It would've been perfect at $19.99.

My sentiments exactly - what a waste of my money. My first and last iD-developed game

Its not an exclusive download (I assume) - it debuted on Shacknews is all; you'll find it mirrored on FilePlanet and other sites.
UK folks* can find it at

http://www.rtcw.jolt.co.uk/index.php?page=download.php&action=filenotes&id=3315
plenty of other places hosting it also.

IIRC the command mentioned below is r_brightness x (put in the command and hit enter to see current value, and try increasing it).

*(anyone with a LINX ip,which is all of uk and fair bit of europe, yes i think international downloads being offline is pants in principle aswell)

Theres also a command which makes the lightsources simply shine brighter (cant remember what it was), for all those afraid-in-the-dark ones out there.

I personally don't know anyone around my office that still has Doom3 installed. I doubt a patch will make any of us reconsider. Big waste of $60 for budget level gaming in my opinion. It would've been perfect at $19.99.

No, you've got it all wrong. The Shacknews staff had a problem with exclusive DEMOS. The reasoning was that your demo is supposed to show off your game to a maximum number of people. Restricting the distribution of a DEMO by making it exclusive is what makes no sense.

There's nothing wrong with exclusive betas, such as the ones often offered on Fileplanet. These require a smaller testing group and it makes sense to release them to a limited number of people first.

I'm pretty sure the outcry against the FilePlanet exclusives is that you had to be a paying member in order to download.

This download is free.

Oh no. ..Shacknews would never deal with exclusive downloads. Remember their big revolt/boycott against companies that gave FilePlanet exclusives? *rollseyes*

"That game was cool for about a week...maybe two. "

I agree...i uninstalled it a long time ago. really no replay value since MP sucks balls and SP is just boring when you know everything thats gonna happen cause the only thing that made the game cool was the scare factor and the cool graphics.

So did no one else ever play Thief? or System Shock? or even Deus Ex? Those were dark games. Doom III is dark but no more so than those. The fact that the game takes place during the day makes any room with a window much less menacing. I really haven't understood why people have gotten so worked up about the darkness level and the flashlight.

Well, I'm not one to say I told ya so about the darkness... well yes I am.

I'll probably buy D3 when it hits the bargain bin. I just think Carmack, being the patron saint of game coding, is way above overusing such a "technique".

Open the console (alt+ctrl+~) and type in:

r_gamma 2

(Or 3 or whatever suits your tastes best)

I would recommend 1.2 or 1.3, and not 2 or 3, because that really washes everything out. I play at 1.3 and it's much better. id's level designers are all freak goths with childhood darkness angst or something.

I hope the patch fixes the memory leak that's in the game, because after I've played through three levels, performance tanks like a mother. A reboot, and everything is fine and dandy again.

Having said that, I'm not really playing anymore after two times through. Going back through Farcry just really makes me appreciate the massive islands, beautiful sunshine and far less cheap crap.
