I think I need a new fan for the cooler on my AMD64 CPU because it currently
makes this buzzing noise when it runs at near top speed. It's not regular fan
noise, it's like something starts rubbing at around 4900-something RPM. The
weird thing is that I haven't been able to completely isolate what causes the
fan to spin up that high... one would presume it's entirely thermal, but it's
not... often if I open the case door it will instantaneously stop, and it will
then start again if I close it, all without registering a CPU temperature
change... this suggests airflow in the case may be contributing, but I can't see
why. Anyway, whatever the cause of the increased RPMs, the noise that kicks it
at close to 5K seems pretty abnormal, so I think I need to address that even if
I find adding a vent to the case or something helps prevent it from running so
fast. I just need to figure out if the fan can be replaced without replacing the
heatsink as well, since the stock cooling seems to keep it all reasonably cool
for my non-overclocked needs.
