Out of the Blue [Sep 03, 2004, 05:36 am ET] – Share – Viewing Comments
As I advance in years I cease to believe I will ever rid myself of some of my
childish ways... the one in particular I am thinking of at this time is my
affection for sugar-sweetened cereal. Now of course I realize this is not the
healthy way to start your day their manufacturers (which is kind of a scary word
to associate with your food, as opposed to, say "cooks") say it is, so I was
heartened to find cereals on the shelf recently advertising lowered sugar
content. In trying these lower sugar versions, I was happy to find that they
were at least as sweet as their counterparts, if not more so, confirming
theories I heard in my youth that our over-processed foods contain sugars and
salts you can't even taste. Imagine how disappointed (not to mention slow on the
uptake) I felt when I noticed the "Splenda" logo on the front of the box. That's
right, artificially sweetened. Oh well, I guess trying to find a healthy way to
enjoy Cocoa Puffs is just a bit delusional.

I think I'm the only one that prefers Shreddies and Raisin Bran over the extra sugary cerealsNo sir! I like both of those cereals just fine, although I haven't had Shreddies in a long time. Right now in my cupboard I have Muslix, Vector, and Cheerios w/Strawberries.

Sugar is the other white powder. It's evil I tell you... eeeevvviiiilllll! It's addictive. And it's harmful unless you're a lumberjack or do strenuous activities all day long. If you can burn the calories, go right ahead, otherwise you should injest stuff with more nutrients (sugar has none whatsoever) and less calories. Sitting on your ass and using a mouse doesn't exactly use up a lot of energy. Go biggy size that soda, Tubby!

Wow, Blue coming out of the sugar-sweetened cereal closet makes me feel a whole lot better. I can now proudly place my Lucky Charms on the conveyor belt checkout and say 'Yes they're mine! And yes, sometimes I do keep the toys inside and do the puzzles! You can take your damn muesli and use it for the kitty litter it is!'

All this cereal talk reminds me of one of my favorite yuletide treats as a kid: Freakies and eggnog. I could run laps on the ceiling after a couple bowls of that. Switched to Apple Jacks after they quit making Freakies, but it wasn't the same. I used to enjoy Boo-Berry as well, but mostly for the colorful..er.. after-effects. I don't eat sugary cereal anymore. I'll grab a box of Cripsy Wheaties n Raisins (or whatever its called) once in a while, but I mostly eat a bagel for breakfast nowadays.
