Frontier: Elite 2

Man, I loved that game. About 5 days ago I went back and started playing it again, so much fun (PC version though)! The original elite was great, and now public access (http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/index.htm)!

I was the same way before I got my car. I literally hated the sun and hid from it when I could. But now I adore it and 95F is just right, even in this humid climate! Fun only starts at 75+, actually more like 80.

Yeah, I know I was exagerating a little bit there. PC's did exist. I think they may have had 8 colours or so at the time. They were big hunks of meatball hardware strung together with spaghetti software, kind of like today but without the graphics and computing power of a mainframe.

Dungeon Master for sure, my all time favorite, made me jump like D3 is doing to me tonight. But differently. Speedball, Populous (maybe it was renamed God as I can't remember God. Or maybe it's because I forsake him so long ago.) Syndicate was cool, forgot all about that one. And of course Death Sword, which was renamed to something else as well. I guess that was the golden age....

Oh yeah, School Yard Shootout, pixelated blood splatters (squares) in the school playground, real lame freeware game, but nobody ever complained about it back then....

Wow, playing multiplayer games years before PC's existed, those were the days.

Well, PC's existed, but they just weren't as good as the Atari or (my fave) Amiga. A buddy and I used to play the hell out of Star Control on his PC, but when I finally got the Amiga version he moved. I had tons of stuff - Speedball, Gods, Frontier: Elite 2, Grand Prix Racing, Dungeon Master, Powermonger, and my all-time favorite - Syndicate. Gosh I miss that little machine. I still have my Commodore CDTV unit (never got all the accessories for it though).

Aye, 85Calfornia is just too, too much. I like 65, though the hUman-types generally like it closer to 70.

I agree about the +/- 65-70 thing, but 85 isn't bad. It was 100 yesterday and about that again today.

Luckily, I'm not out logging test borings this week, as it's going to be in the 90's all week. I was out logging for a week at a bridge site about 3 weeks ago near Kelseyville and it was about 100 all week up there, I think....

I picked up Freedom Fighters last week at Walmart as a $10 jewel case, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of presentation, if not the length (but then, at $10, games can get away with being short).

Hmmm...I never did finish FF8, the ultra-long battles started to annoy me, did anyone ever release a hack to speed up those ungodly long animations for summoning spells? Or anyone know where I could get Morrowind: Bloodmoon cheap?

Or what I'd like to call: crack cocaine and heroin mixed together in game form.

Actually, that's not called Morrowind, that's called Speedball! Best game every made by the Bitmap Brothers for the Atari ST.

I loved soul reaver so I tried to get into defiance but the controls for the PC were so bad that I had to give up. I couldnt get up these steps where I needed to do some jumping because of the camera and movement controls.

Just play Morrowind GOTY. Or what I'd like to call: crack cocaine and heroin mixed together in game form.

I just picked up Wizardry 8 for the first time. It's a real laugh with some of the most (unintentionally) funny dialogue in a game I'm ever heard. The graphics do suck hard though. Oh and it's only £5 from Game here in the UK.

Replaying FF7 and 8 yet again as well and just got into Legacy of Kain Defiance - nice to see that franchise still going from strength to strength. Pity about the camera at times!

Beneath a Steel Sky rocked, too bad it was so short. For anyone who hasn't played them, the old Lucasarts adventure games should be on the "must play" list: Maniac Mansion 2, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and the now-sequel-forsaken Sam and Max....must go cry now.

Ray, have you tried the Gothic games? I really liked those, and they should be cheap by now (plus they take a really long time to finish).

I too am RPG deprived, skipped ToEE because of bad reviews (and it's still not cheap :)) Replayed Torment a few weeks ago, still the greatest RPG ever, could have been an award winning novel. WHAT CAN CHANGE THE NATURE OF A MAN? Heard that the Neverwinter expansions add a lot to the singleplayer game, thinking of picking those up.

One of these days I'm going to break down, buy a PS2, Chrono Cross, FFIX-X-X2, and sit down to play, never to rise again. I'll be found mummified with the controlled embedded in my flesh...

P.S. You NYer's and West Coaster's wouldn't last ten minutes in the 95 degree, 100% humidity that is FL every summer day. I've seen you people get off the plane and start choking on our gill-required air. Looks like we're getting another Hurricane too

[i]"Any other suggestions?"[i]

Well, it sounds like you've played everything. Me on the other hand have been catching up on a lot of games the last few years (I was very stuck into Q2, Q3A, and RTCW and BF1942). I tended to ignore the rest of the world.

Last summer I actually played Half Life (and all the expansions) for the first time. That was a blast. Couldn't get into CS though.

Then I played Planescape and Fallout, which were excellent. Right now I'm playing Baldurs Gate 2, and although I'm barely out of the second dungeon, I think I'm going to like it.

In between Team Arena and RTCW, I always wanted a quick hack 'n slasher and I've *tried* playing Diablo about three times now over the years. I installed it last month again and made it to the third dungeon and had a 7th level mage, but it just sucks, I can't get into it no matter what I do. It looks pretty, I just can't seem to get addicted.

If you want an addictive (for me) dungeon romp and don't care about graphics, try MangBand (http://www.mangband.org). It's 'sorta' multiplayer, but once you get used to it, it gets pretty intense.

Or go browse the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org), lots of great stuff there. For example, I really liked 'Beneath a Steel Sky', which is an old point and clicker, and I thought it was fun. Games don't have to be bleeding edge to be enjoyable.

Of course, I personally have just as much fun sifting through the muck as I do finally finding a gem and getting it to run....

You probably know all this and have been there, done that, but what the heck...

Frankly, I'm surprised this isn't the effort of a large group of people. One of the first questions I asked when DOOM3 went gold was wondering how long it would take for this to happen. If done well, it will be a blast. I give it about a 10% chance of being done well....
