Deus Ex and Thief Plans

A Rob Dyer Q&A on 1UP from earlier in the week (thanks Eurogamer.net) has word from the former Eidos president (who recently joined Crave as president and COO) on future plans for both the Thief series and the Deus Ex series:
We're going to try to get more of a consumer focus into our games. Deus Ex: Invisible War was a good game with solid reviews, but not enough people bought it. We'll fix that in the future. There definitely will be a Deus Ex 3. People want another Thief, too. We'll make that series more modern, though...the medieval thing's run its course. The coming year will bring some really new, innovative titles, plus comebacks from many brands gamers are already familiar with.

"modern" Thief? WTF is the point? my god, don't tarnish the series like that. I don't see how they can do a "Thief" game and not have it take place in the artistically unique universe the series created.

Eidos won't last long enough to rape Deus Ex or Thief one more time. They're a dying company and everybody knows it.

Uhm, the game was shit compared to the first Deus Ex. And Theif 3 was great except for using the stupid Deus Ex 2 engine.

They were both made for the xbox.
They both look dated on the pc because they were ported.
I kept my money.

Consoles will always be one step behind the pc.

"1UP: Where would Eidos be without Lara Croft?

Dyer: We'd be gone, kaput. We just wouldn't be here. She's the foundation of this company.
"

Hmmm...Would certainly explain a lot.

More of a consumer focus?!? What the hell does that mean? And Deus Ex: Invisible War was NOT a good game, which is why not enough people bought it, you fucking genius.

We'll fix that in the future. There definitely will be a Deus Ex 3.

Without Warren Spector, the series' creator. Warren's departure still hasn't "officially" been confirmed, has it? Has anyone heard a single thing about Warren in the last 3 months or so?

People want another Thief, too. We'll make that series more modern, though...the medieval thing's run its course.

LMAO! I swear to God, he must think today is April Fool's. This is too hilarious to be real.

A modern Thief? I feel sick. This guy has to go. Now.

If he puts the Thief name on a shitty console-ly game, he'll be lynched.

As far as DX goes, they fucked up the series with the absolutely shitty DX2 anyway, so the series is dead to me.

NOTE: Since this interview was conducted, Rob Dyer has taken a position with Crave Entertainment as President & COO.

I think this guy knew he was leaving Eidos and wanted to go out with a bang. This is surely all just a bad joke.

Yeah, I agree with you guys about the modern Thief. If I wanted to play a modern version of Thief, I'd get Splinter Cell.

We're going to try to get more of a consumer focus into our games.

Then don't change Thief! We like it how it is. I really liked Thief 2 the best.. the mechanical stuff interested me.

Despite being brilliant, Deus Ex did not sell very well. Invisible War feels like they tried to split the difference between appealing to console kiddies and fans of the original. However because IW also failed to move units, its safe to assume that this strategy is now dead to Eidos as well.

So when I read the words "we're going to try to get more of a consumer focus into our games" I can only assume that they're going to start seriously pandering to one side or the other. The thing is, they already did a hardcore PC game (Deus Ex) but it didn't make much money.

Next stop: Fully consolized "Deus Ex" with lots of small words, big boobs and bright colors. Check your brain at the door; The house built on Laura Croft is going to bend Deus Ex over for the money shot.

We think IW was a travesty, but it's pretty obvious that the deep hurting has just begun. With any luck Eidos will go under before this comes out.

A third Deus Ex 3 would be great if they could throw in a robust toolset for users, so they can make their own maps/missions to go on (with multiplayer). I want to be able to go on cyberpunk adventures in the DX universe with other players, like it should be. Multiplayer competitive play is just not something DX should ever bother to do, it needs to be an RPG/FPS game through and through. As far as I know, there hasn't been many FPS games where you can actually go on missions after the single player campaign is over. Most FPS games have custom content that is nothing more than new maps to play competitive play on..... kidna pointless and repetitive after a while

I would love to load up a server list in Deus Ex 3, log into a server, pick a "class" of cyborg.... then go finishing missions and stuff with other people. If i wanted to frag other players, i have dozens of other FPS games to go to for that. But I have nothing i can go to if I want to play through a cool FPS storyline with people. (I hope Vampire Bloodlines changes that, but Troika is mum about their multiplayer)

Eidos owns the licenses for both the DX and Thief series.

Since this dumbass has left Eidos, I assume that anything he said about Eidos' future is now irrelevant along with this article.

DX2 was junk compared to DX1 as any pc gamer knows, Thief3 was ok.. could of used a different engine for sure but I must admit the story line was great

"The Medieval Thing" is what makes Thief the game it is! I've been a Thief fan from the VERY beginning with Thief 1 (pre-gold edition), and while Ion Storm has every right to change Thief as they wish, I also have the right to not buy their crappy Splinter Cell ripoff. Who the hell do they think they're kidding with the "more modern" Thief thing? YOU JUST WANT YOUR OWN LITTLE SPLINTER CELL.
