Acclaim Closings

A story on MCV (thanks Frans) indicates the bad news just keeps getting worse for besieged developer/publisher Acclaim, which looks to be entering its death throes with some closing announcements:
The company earlier this week announced that it was seeking additional funding, but warned that bankruptcy was a possibility. Sadly, that now looks like being the reality.

Yesterday, the Acclaim Texas facility was closed and this morning the publisher’s Manchester studio was shut down with a loss of 130 jobs. Meanwhile, the European head office in Kensington is not answering its phones.

A announcement to NASDAQ is expected this afternoon.

I will miss the Acclaim of old.

Agree completely -- in the crazy ol' days of my uberbadass 1MB of RAM/dual 1.44MB floppy having Amiga 2000, there were two companies you could always count on to put out something fun: Psygnosis and Acclaim..

'course, that was way back when Sierra was Sierra; EA was just a cute little whisp of a thing; Infogrames was practically some kind of art-house dev, and putting a neon 'Atari' sign in a movie that's set in the distant future didn't seem like such a strange thing to be doing ;).. But those were simpler times. A time when nerds were Nerds, and none of the 'cool' kids would be caught dead in front of a computing machine.

If I recall correctly, they'd busy themselves playing a game called Stare at the Sun for lack of any other options. Hundreds of them.. standing around in fields staring at the sun until their eyeballs burst into flame. Amazing how much things can change in so little time..

RIP Acclaim of yore.

I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now, even though you broke my heart and killed me.
