S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Co-Op in Doubt

A post on STALKER Oblivion-Lost.Com refutes rumors mongered by Computer And Video Games reporting that co-op support would be added to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl following the release of the upcoming shooter (story). They quote GSC Game World's Oleg Yavorsky as saying: "as for co-op, we haven't made any definite plans yet, so I'm not sure when it will be released, if at all. a patch-released co-op is wrong."

I am soo sick of every developer saying the same thing about coop and just tossing it aside its getting ridiculous! Can't one of these companies stay commited to giving the PC gamer what they really want for a change. Why can't they just learn from Serious Sam and just accept the fact that Coop is a must... it's just so friggin typical! BTW I tried the Far Cry CoOp mod and it didn't work for shit, it would be nice if they fix it eventually and show the developers that the fans could create what they couldn't be bothered with! Wonder how long we will wait to see the Doom3 coop mod?? I bet not too long from now...

I remember an interview with them where they explained why coop was recalled.
Would have to look it up now for more exact quotation but if anyone has followed the game long enough he should know that stalker started out pretty much no more complex and detailed than hl2 is currently and it was quite possible then according to them.

But then Stalker started heading a bit more different way(stuff like the minigun was taken out for example due to not fitting the new mood anymore), so as the world also grew bigger and more detailed coop apparently turned technically rather hard to do.
(huge maps, several people all in different parts etc.)
So apparently they may still get it in sometime in the future hopefully but I doubt it really.
Coop may need one big map instead of segmented ones to work correctly, not to mention that the game has a polycount in one sector that OFP had for the whole map(more extreme comparison).

Apparently there's some technical shiet there and they don't really have anyone to follow either(already charting a new path).

Coop from such a game is a bit too much to expect for the first release.
Let em first get everything else properly working and then tell em to also get coop into the game, it is clear they want to do it (unlike ID who thought coop is best kept for consolers)

I'm not sure if this game is also targetted for the XBOX or not, but I bet if it is then the XBOX'ers will get co-op, seems to be the trend. The PC Trend of co-op seems to be we only get co-op for military shooters, i.e. Rainbow 6, Ghost Recon etc. Oh well, one of these days a Dev house will make a good FPS and have co-op, make a lot of money and it will come around again. Guess well just have to wait for a Dev house to 'step up'. It's a risky venture to embark on a technology that was so popular in the past, I can understand why no one wants to touch it %).

Honestly, I just say screw it.

If they are questioning co-op, it does not bode well for the future. Making all of no attempt to add it to the game thus far, how long would it take them to add it now? Another six months in addition to the delay that is already pushing the game out six monts from now?

Thanks, but no thanks.

Give me a game, let me at least play something.

At a 98% on my HL2 pre-load,
Ray

Yup, I've been following this game for a long time (even participated in some of their contests), love the concept and the style. Coop play in a game like this was a HUGE draw.

Its funny, I see this as sort of a glimmer of hope, because as far as I knew they announced not long ago that the feature was in fact cut, so I figured the decision was made. This however, leaves me some hope that after the delay, perhaps they are thinking of setting aside time to include it. I hope so.

Hearing that coop was dropped cut my anticipation for the game in about half.

Gonna do it.

Absolutely.

Read my lips - co-op in the game!

<a day later...>

Er...no more co-op, that would just be silly!

Sure they are using the id report showing no PC gamers want it ;),

I agree. I was more excited about Stalker then Doom3 & HL2 combined... until the recent decision to push it into next year because they didn't want to compete with other titles due out this fall or already releasing.

Coop was one of the main reasons I was so excited. My friend and I had planned to play it together. Hell I was even trying to get some of the guys in my RvS clan interested. But it seems it was all a waste of time...

I hope they don't start backing down on a lot of features they boasted about in interviews.

The delays and now the lack of co-op have sucked all my enthusiasm I had for this game. Bring on Vampire Bloodlines.

Oh come on people, learn to translate...this simply means that if STALKER does sell well, and they earn a big profit, they will make an expansion to it, and add co-op in that.

Who needs co-op when you have a game full of zombies and radioactive dogs to shoot?

Why they would take coop out of this title is beyond me, isn't this supposed to be an unscripted game? Unscripted games take no extra work when adding coop.

Can you show me a link where they promised it in the first place?

Yes. I can. Here are some:

http://www.gengamers.com/html/s_t_a_l_k_e_r__interview_page_2.html
Top of the page:
"S.T.A.L.K.E.R. will have a number of modes to enjoy playing over network. What's planned are standard popular modes, such as Deathmatch, Team Match and Cooperative, as well some new types of network battles (such as MutantsVSHumans). The main points of attraction for players here, as we think, are going to be the Cooperative play - a mode where you can play the game through in a team with your buddies - a virtually on-line game, where up to several dozens of players can join in, and the Team Match - team play a-la Counter-Strike (on dedicated levels)."

http://www.elited.net/interviews/2002/stalker.shtml
Bottom of the page:
"Up to 16 people will be able to play in a game of cooperative multiplayer gameplay. Other modes will include CTF, Deathmatch, and Team Deathmatch with 32-64 players."

http://www.avault.com/articles/getarticle.asp?name=stalker&page=2
Middle of the page:
"How does the single-player game differ from the multiplayer cooperative mode?

The multiplayer cooperative mode is very much like the single-player game, just with more than one human player living in the Zone."

I rest my case. Though I'm sure if I really wanted to spend more time I can show you more proof. Though I am satisified that this will suffice.

But..... I always thought that co-op was going to be one of the key features of stalker! In fact that's why my friends and I were so excited about it... this is very disapointing news.

Another features that's going to get cut out. They promised so much and they have missed release dates and now they are back tracking realizing that they were overly ambitious.

why game developers hate co-op even though the players love it and ask for it all the time ?
