Out of the Blue

Well the state of my work computer that I mentioned "fixing" naturally progressed yesterday into a full-blown saga. Deceptively acting better for a while after I disposed of the dust bunny burrowing into a cooling fan, the machine started locking up again, with the freezes occurring more and more frequently. Crashing on attempts to boot into safe mode more or less confirmed my thoughts that this was hardware related, but it took far longer than it should have to realize the power supply was being flaky... watching the voltages jump in the BIOS screen filled me with confidence that replacing the PSU would finally actually fix things. Sure enough, the first unit I scavenged from the PC graveyard put things right. It cost me a day of productivity, and I came this close (I'm holding my fingers incredibly close together) to breaking something a couple of times, but at least the matter has been resolved. Oh, wait, I said that yesterday, didn't I? Oh well, we shall see. And so, having re-re-re-disposed of the monster...

Anyone else thinking about seeing Hero this Friday? I must admit it looks quite good.

Crisis alert in crisis? Sounds like another group of people trying to get government funding to avoid real work.

That Montana retreat looks pretty nice. Did anyone notice the link for more pictures?

Transformers predict nothing. They're speculating on one possible future that was created by an evil sentient robot. Hardly the same thing.

Nice one JibJab! These publishing clowns knew they couldn't win. They were just trying to milk some publicity out of this issue. The courts should fine them heavily for wasting the courts time.

That's not true!

I mean, that is...a least a minor time share.

I remember growing up and being amazed at all the "rich" people with their $500K mansions. Now, I am completely underwhelmed living in a ~$600K house that needs a bit of fixing up.

Thinking a good minimum down payment would be about $300K,

Rogers... My friend in the building next to mine has much faster speeds than I do

Only one thing to do Dan, help him setup a wireless switch! Tell him it's important to password protect it, and you'll help him set it up!

Do the 3d gamers links get really high speeds though? Every time I click a link there the server ends up busy too. :\

I've done too many bandwidth tests... I've got scores between 500kbps to 3.4Mbps.

Heh - I did not want to scare off nin too early, but that is how I do it as well. It is really hard to actually damage the chip (without being a comlete moron,) it is really easy to spread it on, and that way you have the best control over just how much is on there.

As for the chip/die debate, I do see how that could be an easier mistake while using a Chipzilla chip. Depending on the chips previously use, the Chipzilla chip could have a significantly larger die than the angelic glory of an AMD chip.

Not particularly liking Doom 3, but quite tired of the bashing,
Ray

I just got 5 Mbps Internet and I am not impressed. Anyone know any free sites where I can see how fast I can download a large file?

Just click any of those links you get spammed with that say "Free Trial Adult XXX Click Here Now".

Or go to 3dgamers and download a demo.

All that open space- and the lot is only 1.72 acres? Ah well, its still a shitload cheaper than the shacks on 1/4 acre that sell in my area for $200k.

How can we call this a free country when you have idiots trying to destroy a clever marketing ploy and a creative name?

How could you call it a free country if they couldn't? The first amendment doesn't mean you can say whatever want whenever you want. There are differences, degrees and limits in protected and commercial speech.

Stupid people breed stupidity.

That's funny, I was just thinking that myself.

Once, long ago I was playing a video game when a stranger appeared on screen and said, "All you base belong to us!"

Right then and there I knew that something was going to happen to the WTC.

Let me guess: It was the "Someone set us up the bomb" line that clued you in, right?

What kind of thermal compound are you planning on using? I've had good luck with the Arctic Silver Ceramique stuff.

Intel included some stuff in the box. It's what I used last time (which is the first time I had to mess with the stuff).

If I find some Artic locally, I might pick it up, though...
