It'll be interesting to see how Half Life 2 stacks up to this as far as sales go. I for one already have Doom 3, and I'll preorder Half Life just as soon as it goes gold. Between these two and (maybe) Evil Genius, it's a good time to be a gamer.

What are the actual numbrs, though?

It is the second coming of PC gaming or just a top seller?

Loving the 'ol pointless release,

HL2 will do just as well because of all the people that played the HL Mods for the last few years. I'm not surprised D3 is selling well, it's the Grand-father to games like HL.

Shame on you Ray, #1 in the USA is almost a statistic (to a marketing VIP).

now if only imps would pop out behind ever door a PR person walks through and bite their heads off.

Ok now that's just 1 week. City of Heros was the number 1 game in the US for close to 3 months.

And I honesty tried to replay back through Doom3 but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

BTW Ray check out the Egosoft forums there are alot of newbie guides as the game can be overwhelming but in a good way if you don't try to absorb it all at once like a Derek Smart Game. *shivers*

Why are you using just the US as a comparison between the two? The news article shows Doom 3 as being #1 in 8 countries, thats MUCH more significant than just the US figure you use. I really don't get your point, comparing a global #1 verse a US #1, Apples and Oranges. No contest.

I like how in the press release it keeps mentioning PC game sales but not overall game sales. No one but pc gaming freaks care about pc sales, if doom 3 was number 1 for all games overall some people would give a shit, alas.

I would be surprised if doom 3 was even in the top 5 overall. Why do companies make pc games again?

Geez. Far Cry is still on the top 5 of UK charts and has been in the top 10 for 22 weeks according to http://www.elspa.com

Seems like The Sims just wont go away either

Ever since "The Sims," I haven't given a rats a$$ about "Number 1 Game" or "Game of the Year."

That game was the best seller for a lonnnng time, and yet it is by far the worst game-concept I've ever seen. Why so many people love it, I have no idea.

And this is coming from a guy that has a very broad range of tastes when it comes to gaming. I love all types: action, adventure, rpg, puzzle, stealth, sim, strategy; the list goes on and on.

But the Sims? Please.

What exactly is a "hotcake" and why do they sell so well?

Is it the type of cake that you can have and eat too? (another cliche phrase I always failed to understand)

Because PC games and console games are different markets. Sure Madden probably outsold Doom 3, but to their respective audiences, it really doesn't matter.

Good to see that some people still BUY games. Maybe the game industry won't go under just yet. To all the dicks that pirate everything, I hope they enjoy the condition they are creating for us all.

The gaming industry is recording record profits in a bad economy. The gaming industry rivals that of the movie industry - so no - they aren't going under.

Don't believe the hype. The gaming industry has a very powerful lobby and propagandizes its position with psuedo-scientific polls and figures. If you look at the revenue, you will find no cause for alarm.

Y'know, you can answer questions like that with Google...

SELL LIKE HOT CAKES - "Hot cakes cooked in bear grease or pork lard were popular from earliest times in American. First made of cornmeal, the griddle cakes or pancakes were of course best when served piping hot and were often sold at church benefits, fairs, and other functions. So popular were they that by the beginning of the 19th century 'to sell like hot cakes' was a familiar expression for anything that sold very quickly effortlessly, and in quantity." From "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997)

*Boggle* I hope you're not a Games Designer. People like games about people - that's all there is to say about it.

I've already pre-ordered Sims 2.

Yeah, piracy REALLY hurt Doom 3 sales, didn't it?!

You gotta love PR. One minute (be it movies, games, music, etc) they're talking about how many million copies they sold, and the next they're whining about how they didn't sell enough, and boo hoo hoo, it's all piracy's fault.

Please...

Don't try this at home. Don't try this when you're alone. Don't try this at home. You're gonna hurt yourself. http://www.laptopic.com

Just because more people were willing to buy it does not mean piracy didn't hurt the sales.

Piracy hurts the PC games industry more than the consoles because its so easy. Why write a game for a PC when some warez monkey will get it before its released, you don't really hear much of that for console games do you?
