Apparently have already forgotten that the original Half Life's story was basically EXACTLY THE SAME as the original Doom. Big Portal opens and Scary Shit comes out, You Must go to Hell / MarioJump Dimension and Kick Scary Boss Monster ass.
Since there is very little known yet about the storyline in Half Life 2, I wonder why every little fanboy keeps spewing the "HL2 Will PWN J00!!!!!!!"
Oh wait, I do know..
As for the Doom 3 to System Shock 2 comparison, it's not completely fair, and the immersion and atmosphere in Doom 3 match that of System Shock perfectly. It's just that System Shock 2 is a slower paced game, with much more focus on character development and problem solving with a dash of combat thrown in, whereas Doom 3 is all about shooting monsters. The slower pace of System Shock alters the feel you have about it, since you have more time to wander around and realise how scary it is. In most cases in Doom 3, you're too busy shooting imps to notice things like that. If that makes sense...
What I can't understand is that id has NEVER said, once, during the entire four years, that Doom 3 was going to be anything BUT a straight out shooter, and yet some of you are still bitching about it being a straight out shooter? I guess for some people it's never good enough.
I'd give Doom 3 about an 85%. Looks great, plays great (after a ton of tweaks, which id really should have done themselves, it's absurd that the first time I got like 15fps and after three days of tweaking and changing, I'm getting 35-40), is atmospheric and sometimes even a bit scary. (Although I scare pretty easily).
The cheap shit in the game just gets annoying after about level 12, and then you still have 16 levels of more cheap shit going. Funny enough, the Hell level is the one level where the cheap shit just doesn't happen, and it feels the most like the old Doom. Instead of monsters spawning right behind your ass, they spawn on the other side of the room / hall / building, and come for you.
It's no System Shock 2, but it never tried to be.
And yes, I am VERY interested to see what Raven will do with this, although Quake 4 holds very little interest for me. I'd love to see a Soldier of Fortune or Jedi Knight made with this engine.

Edit :
Being too cool for console games must be a terrible burden. I'm sure the ladies think you're a real winner, though!Classic.
Anyone not currently playing console games is missing out on an absolute shitload of great games. Sadly to say, innovation is currently found on consoles, not on the PC.
EAGERLY awaiting Fable.
