Afternoon Q&As

  • Monolith/WB
There's a Jason Hall Q&A on The Matrix Online Vault talks with the head of WBIE about their acquisition of developer Monolith: "WBIE is not a publisher. Monolith will continue produce games for other publishers. And WBIE will conitnue [sic] to work with other publishers and developers. The licenses will be granted to the developers and publishers that will be the best fit for the property."
  • City of Heroes
The City of Heroes Interview on GameSpy talks with NCSoft's Kevin Sullivan after tracking him down at GenCon to inquire about their superhero MMORPG: "It was the smoothest launch ever for an MMORPG! It launched the same day as Lineage II (another NCSoft MMORPG), and we've never had a server crash, despite the popularity."
  • DemonStone
Atari.com.au's DemonStone Q&A talks with Forgotten Realms author R.A Salvatore about his participation in development of the games based on his books. Thanks Frans.
  • Stalingrad
The Stalingrad Map Designer Q&A on Gamebiz talks with Sergey Balabanov about the recreation of the battlefields of World War II for their upcoming RTS game: "I think our biggest challenge was the lack of new objects in the beginning of the project. Initially, missions were based on existing Blitzkrieg assets. New units - tanks, buildings, trees, etc. - gradually arrived later, so we had to replace old content with new one. Sometimes we ended up with significant changes that had to be made to our maps, and sometimes we started making them from the scratch."
  • Void War
The Void War Q&A on Boomtown talks with Jay Barson about Void War, Rampant Games' imminent space combat game, as well as what it's like to be a small independent developer in today's gaming marketplace: "Void War is doing something pretty different, moving away from mission-based gameplay and focusing on pure dog fighting action. We've also worked hard to make the game easy to play (if challenging to master), so that it is accessible by beginners to the genre."
  • Gorky Zero: Aurora
The Gorky Zero Q&A on HC.Gamer talks with Grzegorz Miechowski of Metropolis Software about Gorky Zero: Aurora, the upcoming continuation of their action game series: "You can stun enemies, execute 'Silent Kill' with the knife, when approach the enemy silently from behind, use gadgets to distract them, and much more. We use RenderWare Physics Engine, so many elements are movable, i.e. You can move the explosives and then shoot and explode them in the place you choose."

I think CoH had the best release in terms of stability by far... compared to other mmorpg's. I think the game is great for what it is, and I will continue to pay to play until I hit the max lvl. I love the teamplay.

I'm also really looking forward to EQ2. The teamplay feature in that game sounds really fun.

"No. No. We didn't sell out. Really. I swear. Honest. Hey, you guys like Matrix games, right?"

I will think peaceful, happy thoughts about getting my new video card RMA'd.

I think what's impressive about CoH is the dramatic build up of customer base, due to positive word of mouth. I swore I'd never play a game with a monthly fee, and here I find myself logging on nightly, having a blast! (But I've never had a server crash outright... disconnect me, or lag, sure, but not crash.)

Yep: gotta agree. The launch day for CoH was good, but not that good: there was some downtime and a lot of lag and internal map disconnects that made the game difficult to play.

Still, I would rank it up there with Dark Age of Camelot on the launch scale.

Uh, not sure what CoH he's talking about, but I've experienced about 3 server crashes since launch. Granted, that still is nothing compared to other MMP's, but still, Kevin needs to come back to reality.
