The interface really isn't that bad, it just needs to do way too many things for it to be anything but complicated. Not to rag on Eve (although it looks more boring than watching paint dry), but I doubt it has anywhere NEAR the complexity of X2.

It's great that you can fly around, switch ships, own ships, have them be your wingmen, own capital ships, dock smaller ships in it, have other smaller ships be wingmen to slightly less small ships, own fabs, own a ship to place your own fabs, own ships to ferry goods to and from fabs, own mines to supply your own fabs etc, but you're going to need to be able to control it all as well, while still retaining a full flight model.
Try doing that and still delivering a decent interface.

But, I can understand the complaint, X2 takes a LONG time to learn.

Anybody know of any other X2 mod sites?

By the way, don't bother trying to play X2 unless you plan on using a joystick.

Bleh...to be honest, I really disliked X2, largely because of the godawful interface. It felt like I had to wrestle the game to the ground, punch it in the face a few times, and choke it a bit before it'd do anything and that makes me cranky. From the interface and ease-of-use standpoint, EVE rips it to shreds (and looks prettier while doing so). X2 had potential, but a number of design issues and a horrid interface scared me away.

#7: "It's not for the people who like arcade space shooters like the Freespace, Freelancer or the Wing Commanders."

Ummm, I loved freespace1 and 2, Freelancer and Starlancer and the Wing Commander series, and I absolutely loved X2: The Threat....

Unless they add multiplayer to X2, I don't understand this comment.

Then you've never played X2...lol...

This is actually a surprise to me. I kinda backed away from the X-community for a while to take a break and this happens...I should do that more often...lol...

The last patch set this sim off to where it could stand on it's own for now anyway...with the exception of landing on planets and a better 'combat' part, this is the best space-trading sim out there...

EDIT: Good points, Creston...

You see, judging from what I've read on devnet, the Xpansion will feature a bigger universe and more "varied" sectors. However, Ego's definition of more varied means that instead of 100kms apart in a perfect square, the gates will be 200kms apart in a perfect square, and there will be clumps of factories with nothing in between.

They honestly DO NOT comprehend what made Freelancer's sectors so great (the fact that they were ALL different, in size, setup, looks, what factories, the highway lanes that ran differently, etc). They just don't get it. Or they don't want to get it.

Furthermore, the Xpansion will feature some new weapons, some new ships, and a new storyline.
Since we've seen how well Ego does with a storyline, this means that in the Xpansion your sectors will become bigger, and you'll get a few more crappy lasers to fit on your insanely slow ships, and that's about it.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy X2, although I'm pretty well played out, but the stuff that NEEDS to be fixed is just totally ignored. There will be no fix for the horridly broken economy, the AI is as good as its going to get with patch 1.4 (and that ain't saying much), and the sectors will still be the same boring shit over and over again.

All in all, I wouldn't get my hopes up too much for this.

Maybe they'll get it right for X5 or so.

Today's letters will be Y and O. The Y is right f&**ing next to the U and the O is 2 letters right of that.

Uh doesn't that spell YUO ? Hmmm I dont think you can spell YOU either.....oh the irony.

The grammer and spelling police come out but they turn out to be just as stupid.

...still needs to get around to actually playing this game now that it has been installed for a few months.

its funny you say that Ray because thats exactly what I've been doing. I bought it, installed it and had every intention of playing through the campaign but after just the tutorial I realized the time commitment this thing required and I kinda left it until "later".

at this point I doubt "later" is going to come.

This is basically the Doom 3 looking version of your space sim/resource/empire building type game.

And another reason I need a faster computer to run this baby at it's glory

To the others... this game CAN BE and MORE THEN LIKELY WILL BE, not for you freelancer/star lancer/shootum-up types. This is the the equivlant of Morrorwind meets Privateer. It's not for everyone and if ya dive in too deep your head can and probably will explode with all the things that can be done in this game.

Sides I gotta replay the game just to see the ending cause my last save I had dissapeared and I never got to see anything after the one guy gets killed at the end of the main storyline

Believe if you can't even be bothered to type the word u correctly this game is not for you.

Not really. The mouse controls on this game suck. The keyboard isn't too bad, but I use a joystick and rearely use the keyboard controls so I couldn't give an opinion on those.

This game is definetely a time consumer though. The only thing I think that Egosoft dropped the ball on was Life of the Universe. They have made great strides towards it with the latest patch, but I think there is still room for improvement. (Not saying I don't like the game though, just critiquing (sp?))

The game is just fine. MOO3 was a spreadsheet with graphics, especially before they patched it.

It just happens to be a game for those who enjoy trading sims and empire building. It's not for the people who like arcade space shooters like the Freespace, Freelancer or the Wing Commanders.

If you liked Freelancer because it was simple, you're probably not going to like X2. It doesn't take that long to pick up and start playing, but it is complicated and VERY time consuming.

I hear this game is kinda hard to pick up and play in that is has a steep learning curve. Is this true?

I'm the kinda guy who got a kick out of freelancer cuz it was easy to play.

Awesome.
I love the guys at Egosoft.
After I put in over 300 hours on X2 over the course of the last year or so, they came out with a patch that added some nice content, almost a free expansion.
And now this!
My wife and kids will be very dissappointed over this news.
Only weak links in the game to me were the combat and storyline, but not enough to keep me from being hooked.
