Jaws Game Plans

Cue the trademark ominous music and start watching for fins in the water, as Majesco Acquires Video Game Rights to Universal Pictures' and Steven Spielberg's Jaws (thanks Frans), announces plans for a game based on Jaws. Here's a bit on the game, which is slated for release next summer on the PC, PS2, and Xbox next summer to coincide with the film's 30th anniversary:
In Majesco's Jaws, players assume the role of a Great White shark driven to a predacious frenzy by the sonic emanations of underwater oil drilling equipment. To defend their underwater territory, players undertake a campaign to drive the raiders away while simultaneously solving a series of action-based puzzles designed to thwart the player.

Taking the game to realistic heights is Appaloosa's advanced game engine that produces stunning underwater visuals and realistic physics that enable the Great White to perform a variety of leaping, twisting assaults, thus rendering havens such as dive platforms and boats vulnerable to attack.

Any Treasures of the Deep PSX fans out there? Anyone remember the bonus level where you played a shark and had to eat as much as possible under a time limit? One of my faves.

I completely forgot about that game wow! I played through most of it and now that I think about it, it was immersive as hell. Best underwater graphics on PSX. Exploring the ocean not knowing what you could come across , sharks hunting you down. And nothing like going postal on pods of innocent dolphins

Did anyone else see that National Geographic program that was on a couple of years ago, which showed a fisherman 'taming' great whites by putting his hand on their snout? There's some pictures of the technique here:

"Wow, don't really think you actually watched the Air Jaws specials. As far as "gay" shark behavior, here's hoping that the game has a big bonus for eating homophobes...then again, sharks can eat just about anything, but I wonder if they'd be able to stand the taste. "

Is this some kind of witty cut down? You're too overly passive aggressive fag sack.

As far as this game goes, this is actually a reworking of a shark game that was announced last year, so i'm hopeful that this will be at least decent. Just wish I could remember

there was a jaws toy which was a hollow shark with a hinged mouth and used rubber bands in the 70's. you'd place various weighted and shaped plastic tokens like fishing boots and fish bones into the tray like mouth. you'd take turns fishing out the plastic toys with a fishing pole and when enough weight was removed the mouth would snap shut. maybe thats the game. dangling a fishing line over a 3d sharks mouth and pulling and placing jigsaw or tetris like pieces into it. ohh ohh, feed em a fish and then take the car bumper. just kidding.

DUDE! I HAD one of those!!!

I will think peaceful, happy thoughts about getting my new video card RMA'd.

Halsey, you've quoted perhaps the finest monologue ever recorded on film. And to think that Robert Shaw was drunk off his ass when he did it makes the achievement that much greater.

Everytime I see this movie on cable, I turn over just to watch this scene. It's brilliant.

That and "We're going to need a bigger boat" or "He ate the light."

Quint: Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian t'Leyte, we'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in twelve minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half hour. Tiger. Thirteen footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail.

What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin', so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the squares in the old calendars like the Battle o' Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that shark he go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away.
Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those sharks come in and... they rip you to pieces.

You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson's mate. I thought he was asleep, Reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. Three hundred and sixteen men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the twenty-ninth, nineteen-forty five. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

And Ray Charles was shot down, but he got up to do his best.

Na, they're gonna combine the two. A top secret project where scientists train sharks to attack Nazi U-Boats! It'll be called "Das Boot Es Bitten By De Sharken". WHOO-hoo!!

I want to see bullet time as well. All good games have bullet time.

Chalk up another winner to Majesco!

Good luck living up to the legacy of the classic NES adaptation of Jaws.
