Morning Q&As

  • Half-Life 2
There's a Half-Life 2 Q&A on SoGamed (thanks HomeLAN Fed, who curiously credit us for this). In the conversation the software engineer goes into details about demo recording and playback, HLTV, and other topics, including, of course, a question about the release: "We are planning to deliver a release candidate to Vivendi later this month and we're hoping to see the product on store shelves this fall, but we do not have a confirmed ship date at this time."
  • Vivisector
There's a Vivisector: Beast Inside Q&A on HomeLAN Fed News talking with Action Forms about their upcoming shooter: "We already have all the necessary instruments necessary for creating new levels and mods. We were using them ourselves while developing the game."

Why was this such a difficult paragraph for Valve to compose?

Exactly....that's all they had to say. But they sat on it, knowing they weren't going to make their deadline.

If I order a pizza, and you say "it'll be there in 30 minutes" KNOWING that it's gonna take an hour and a half to get there, is it any surprise that the customer is pissed when the pizza finally shows up? All you had to do was call back and say "We've had a few problems, and we're running late. We'll get it there as soon as we can."

I will think peaceful, happy thoughts about getting my new video card RMA'd.

Would you rather they keep picking new dates and screwing it up again?
How about this:

"We fucked up. We aren't going to make the September date. In fact, we don't know when the game will be out. All we can say is that it will probably be next year sometime."

Why was this such a difficult paragraph for Valve to compose? Even pre-source-theft it would have been reasonable since they obviously had a lot more work to do than they let on back in May 2003.

Of course they could have avoided the whole stupid thing with three little words during the first announcement:

"When It's Done"

Cool news about the demos features - think they're shooting for the machinima fans?
Source seems to be so customisable, I think it's great they're thinking of the mod community (which, really, led to HL1's longevity) - my only worry is how complicated it will be to actually do anything! If i make a new texture do I have to add it to an attribute libray, give it sound properties, physics propreties, bullet shrapnel properties?? From what I've seen it's all cool and customisable, but kinda scares the bejesus out of me too.
Um, ok, that got wierd and OT.

Does that mean Valve lied to try and steal some of DOOM's thunder? With their past history, it kind of looks like it.
FFS that's ridiculous. All this talk of stealing thunder is such a load of shit. Short sentences:
IF. DOOM. SELLS. WELL. IT. WILL. BE. GOOD. FOR. VALVE.

They aren't selling washing machines where you buy one or the other, they're selling games and this is quite a different market to most things:
1)They are selling to an audience who, on the whole, are affluent enough (and fans enough of the original) to afford both.
2)Imagine 50% of HL2's audience own DIII. I believe Source's minimum requirements to look good are lower than DIII's. Therefore people that own DIII own competent computers that will run Source. If DIII were a fantastic game, they might even have upgraded.
3)There might even be some console owners who are tempted to move to PC gaming. Minimal, sure, but some.
4)By far the most important: They are different enough games to mean they are not either-or products. If they were producing a creep-around-in-the-shadows-and-get-scared game, they might be scared. Hell, if they were working on Aliens v Predator they might be worried. But they're not. Doom Marine and Gordon carry guns, that's where the similarity ends in actual end-product terms.

Valve are in one of the few industries where quality competition is GOOD at this point in the development cycle. What wouldn't be good is if (for instance) id's new engine blows Unreal 3's out of the water, but they are slated for equal release dates. THAT is scary competition for a game company.

Nobody's gonna forget HL2 is coming out, even as they're paying for DIII.

Edit: God, my grammar's awful

Valve-whining threads have become worse than any other.

Yeah, that's what happens when you pick a release date, and then when you know you won't make it, instead of coming clean, sit on your ass and don't say a word for months.

That kinda pisses people off...I can't say I blame them.

I do believe that the thief3 first "release candidate" was accepted, so miracles do happen!

And that's a good thing? Didn't Thief 3 get released with a major bug when loading saved games whereby it reverted the difficulty to normal? I'm hoping that the QA procedure for HL2 will be a little more, uh, complete...

And if you want to mod, you have three choices. Don't wait for what Croteam is doing, their engine won't reach enough hands to give a successful mod. Stick with UT2K4, Doom 3 or HL2. And how can you complain about an engine being too dark? Add more lights!

Mm....release candidate. Add two to three months for acceptance. Valve, especially Gabe, just needs to know when to shut his mouth. 'This summer!' he once said.

Remember back...oh what was it? Weeks ago when DOOM 3 was imminent? There was a Valve press release every day trying to steal DOOM's publicity?

I don't think Gabe was trying to steal anyone's thunder. I just think he and the Valve crew are TERRIBLE at predicting release dates.

Valve wins the "Trent Reznor - "I swear it'll be out this year, but I won't specify a year in particular" award".

Congrats, Gabe, now get back to work. (And tell George no, he can't license your engine.)

I could swear Gabe said "16 days for bug quashing".

DOOM 3 release is August 3rd. 3 +16 = 19th. Today is the 16th.

Does that mean Valve lied to try and steal some of DOOM's thunder? With their past history, it kind of looks like it.

Release candidate later this MONTH! Release of game THIS FALL?

That could be the end of November, right?

I hope Croteam is on time with their new engine. DOOM is too dark and the map editor looks like a nightmare. I wouldn't trust these Valve guys if they said the Sun was going to rise tomorrow. Unreal 3 is still way, way off.

I wanna MOD! But it has to be a good engine with good people behind it.
