DOOM 3 in the U.K.

Long-awaited Doom 3 hits the UK is a BBC article announcing the availability of id's latest in the U.K. (thanks Mike Martinez). The article discusses the game, as well as the heightened level of sensitivity to violent games across the pond at the moment based on the recent murder that some are attempting to connect with Manhunt (story). In related news, MCV reports the possibility of shortages of the new release, quoting U.K. retailers complaining that they don't have sufficient stock to meet demand, while quoting Activision defending themselves by pointing out that retailers all over Europe are being screwed by high demand, and that U.K. retailers are not being singled out.

I don't know why I thought of this, but do you drive on the opposite side of the road in the UK version of GTA?

I got mine today, very impressed with the graphics, not very impressed with gameplay, very, very predictable. I am about 2 hours into the game and getting bored, open door, monster pounces, one in front one behind....YAWN I really hope it's not all dark rooms and cheap scares throughout the game, it's good for 10 mins then gets too predictable, come on ID I thought you guys were supposed to be the greatest game makers? It takes more than pretty GFX ya know.

I also had 30 mins trying to get my 5.1 working, eventually had to turn HW acceleration down to basic.

Isn't the whole point of GTA to allow us to drive on whichever side of the road we damn well feel like ?

I'm not sure I'm correct on this, but I believe the UK versions of GTA all drive on the US side of the road, as they're set in the US

However, I beleive that GTA: London 1969 (the GTA1 expansion pack) had you driving on the UK side of the road.

Although I'm from the UK, I can't actually remember which side of the road people drive on! It's been a while since I've been in a car, and even longer since I drove one...

Which goes someway to explaining the rampant piracy that being going on; many people I know downloaded it whilst waiting for official release they had prepurchaed. But some are already bored of it's simple gameplay, and have tried to cancel their pre-orders!

When will content businesses (games, movies, television, etc.) learn that the 21st century internet removes international barriers and staggered release days harm them rather than benefit them?

And like USA we've got lame old CD-ROM version too, no DVD-ROM. At least Amazon's free 3-5 day delivery service got it to me on morning of release (and at cheapest price in UK, but still some $45 though).

The scary thing is Rolphus that there seems to be a surprising number of actual drivers in the UK that don't know either

I feel a game related lawsuit coming on!

I wonder if ID will make the xbox people wait for this like Bungie did with the PC version of Halo.

We've stayed on the same side of the road since pre-history, even through the romans, normans, saxons, medieval, as have the Japanese. ;p

I think you'll find that it's you who drive on the opposite side, and only because you copied the French who had intentionally swapped to the "opposite side" under Napolean because they didn't want to drive (carts and carriages) on the same side of the road as their enemy the English.

Bungie didn't make us wait for the PC version of Halo, Microsoft did after they bought the poor buggers.

Driving on the right is directly translated into French as "run away"...

Actually I hope it does influence people to kill zombies. Last time I was in London the zombie population was clearly out of control. Every time I picked up a newspaper or a candy bar a zombie would spawn and try to bite my head off. It's terrible.

The MANHUNT story is a fake - funny how the media even refers to its own misinformation while vomiting more misinformation.

And ID has never made an immersive single-player game and they probably never will. But their engine does get put to good use in the hands of capable developers. I've stated this before the release and now I can simply say 'told you so' now that the pile of boredom is out on the market.

I just played 30 minutes of Doom3 having got home from work (arrived this morning - go Amazon!)... and is it just me, or is it rather, well, flat? I didn't feel drawn in, or really that involved. It just annoyed me by being rather dark, having to flip to the flashlight every other second... I might play for another 30 minutes tomorrow, but right now there's nothing there to make me want to play it any more. As far as I can tell, the aim is to walk between badly-lit rooms and expect something to burst out of a wall, such that you can switch to a weapon, lose sight of it, shoot, miss, switch back to the torch, find it again, and repeat. Just seems a bit empty... in fact, all I want to do now is go play the original. It's more fun, even if it is a whole lot simpler.

Maybe I'm not in the right mood... or perhaps I'm not the intended audience, but I learnt a lot from Doom 1... it's why I do what I do and why I enjoy doing it. Doom 1 was fun. And that's an important word.

If HL2 doesn't deliver, I might kerplode. That's right, 'kerplode'. But HL2 is different. But this is a Doom thread, so I won't mention HL2 anymore. Not once. HL2. Hah.
