DOOM 3 in the U.K.

Long-awaited Doom 3 hits the UK is a BBC article announcing the availability of id's latest in the U.K. (thanks Mike Martinez). The article discusses the game, as well as the heightened level of sensitivity to violent games across the pond at the moment based on the recent murder that some are attempting to connect with Manhunt (story). In related news, MCV reports the possibility of shortages of the new release, quoting U.K. retailers complaining that they don't have sufficient stock to meet demand, while quoting Activision defending themselves by pointing out that retailers all over Europe are being screwed by high demand, and that U.K. retailers are not being singled out.

Snatch. Brilliant movie!

That was the first movie that I had to rewind often to understand what Jason Statham was saying. I don't understand it, I'm a US citizen, but grew up as a Monty Python and Black Adder fan. I should be able to grasp a harsh British accent by now.

Also, my first introduction to a pikey as well. Loved the DVD "pikey subtitling".

EDIT: Fifteen words, and I managed to squeeze in two spelling errors. Undoubtedly I managed one or two more now...

A friend of a friend lives in the UK, and had to explain the word "pikey" to me. Apparently, it's the U.S. equivalent (or to be fair, vice versa) of "trailer trash".
They're gypsies. See the outstanding movie Snatch for a better explaination.
Edit: As Necro points out, it's not a nice word for them.

Tell you the truth, I was shaken a bit for 30 mins, right up to the point where I was standing at the doorways to rooms shining me torch trying to get a glimpse of what was hiding in the room, I was that nervous about entering. 1 hour later and I am walking into rooms without a care in the world, shotty out/torch away, you get used to it and become immune to the fear.

ID spoilt this game, it should have been mainly in daylight and have some choice dark moments so that you do not become immune to it all, they simply over cooked the darkness.

While the whole "fear" aspect of the game tails off pretty quick, once you get to Hell, the artwork just gets really impressive.

That - and is it possible to be scared in broad daylight?

Personally, I kept thinking about the Marine missions in AVP 2 and how intense you could now make that type of game with this engine.

and is it just me, or is it rather, well, flat? I didn't feel drawn in, or really that involved. It just annoyed me by being rather dark, having to flip to the flashlight every other second...
Yeah... it was mentioned last week that it is rather short on pscyhological scares, preferring to do the Half-Life jumping-things-behind-doors thing, and the lights going off and things dropping in. Personally I'm like you - Amazon.co.uk (whose preordering service impressed me immensely btw) delivered this morning and the first hour or so had me thinking 'this is good, great graphics, feeling a bit like Alien... but where is HL2'

And why id chose to use out of body cutscenes is beyond me. Did they not learn from HalfLife?

We've stayed on the same side of the road since pre-history, even through the romans, normans, saxons, medieval, as have the Japanese. ;p

Yeah, we used to ride horses on the left leaving our sword arm (right arm for most people) free to twat people going the other way...

I just played 30 minutes of Doom3 having got home from work (arrived this morning - go Amazon!)... and is it just me, or is it rather, well, flat? I didn't feel drawn in, or really that involved. It just annoyed me by being rather dark, having to flip to the flashlight every other second... I might play for another 30 minutes tomorrow, but right now there's nothing there to make me want to play it any more. As far as I can tell, the aim is to walk between badly-lit rooms and expect something to burst out of a wall, such that you can switch to a weapon, lose sight of it, shoot, miss, switch back to the torch, find it again, and repeat. Just seems a bit empty... in fact, all I want to do now is go play the original. It's more fun, even if it is a whole lot simpler.

Maybe I'm not in the right mood... or perhaps I'm not the intended audience, but I learnt a lot from Doom 1... it's why I do what I do and why I enjoy doing it. Doom 1 was fun. And that's an important word.

If HL2 doesn't deliver, I might kerplode. That's right, 'kerplode'. But HL2 is different. But this is a Doom thread, so I won't mention HL2 anymore. Not once. HL2. Hah.

Actually I hope it does influence people to kill zombies. Last time I was in London the zombie population was clearly out of control. Every time I picked up a newspaper or a candy bar a zombie would spawn and try to bite my head off. It's terrible.

comedy gold right there people.

try to picture someone saying that in a serious tone, like being interviewed by the evening news or something.

DOOM3, i got my copy. what about you?

The MANHUNT story is a fake - funny how the media even refers to its own misinformation while vomiting more misinformation.

And ID has never made an immersive single-player game and they probably never will. But their engine does get put to good use in the hands of capable developers. I've stated this before the release and now I can simply say 'told you so' now that the pile of boredom is out on the market.
