Out of the Blue

The BlueTruck is back from the shop, and riding like a dream on its new after-market suspension. As I was driving home, though, between moments of being pleased with how this all turned out, I got to puzzle over new noises from the rear. The clunking was gone, but it was replaced by an assortment of clatters, rattles, and squeaks that made it seem like something was disconnected back there. When I got home I realized I couldn't have been more correct, as the old sway bar had been placed in the back of the truck after it was removed. I'm not sure if someone intended to discard it later or if they actually thought I wanted it back, but at least getting it out of there solved all the awful noises it was making.

The solution that works for me is (and I have no idea why this works, but it does):
1)Start of level, awful sound repetition / stuttering
2)Load up PDA, watch a video clip or listen to a voice message. These don't seem to jitter so much.
3)Hit q (bound to s_restart) several times
4)Walk about a bit, hitting q at the first sign of juttering

Eventually it sorts itself out. Enjoying it so far - just seen the (DST ;)) first sign of the 'thing' growing through the alpha labs - with the candles and random satanic symbols lying about

The advice seems to be 'wait until id release the patch' but it's very annoying and it's the first time I have been forced to see why people go for consoles. Still, the price of being current

Consoles - blech. I'd much rather deal with occasional glitches like this than lo-res consoles with joystick controls. I'm using headphones and enjoying it just fine, especially with a non-gaming wife and an 18-month-old son sleeping in the next room. It was use headphones or risk my health and safety....

Enjoy the game - I'm taking my time (what little I have to play and grabbing a few screenshots along the way. Just got to the monorail level.

Doom 3 apparently does not work well with some implementations of NFII in surround sound, from what I read.
Yeah I read that too, so I disabled the onboard sound in the bios and installed an old Turtle Beach 5.1 card and it still does it. Now I'm trying reinstalling but I doubt that'll make much difference.

At the moment it's just jittery and stuttery, repeating each sound several times. This is regardless of what resolution / graphics I'm at, elimintating that it's because the computer's too slow - which it isn't. It's a non-overclocked AMPXP 2800, 1GB Ram, 9800 Pro, DirectX 9.0b (installed off the DIII cd!), Asus A7N8X Deluxe V2, well over the minimum requirements. I've read about NForce2 mobos dropping the sound after a while, but that's not the problem I have. s_restart doesn't make a difference. Neither does lowering the audio acceleration in dxdiag. Any thoughts anyone?

That's exactly what I was experiencing (AXP 2500+, DFI NFII Ultra Infinity, 1 GB RAM, 5700U) - Doom 3 apparently does not work well with some implementations of NFII in surround sound, from what I read. I have a 4 speaker + sub Klipsch setup, apparently Doom 3 only likes 5.1 surround. Use stereo sound or headphones, should work fine. Not sure about a fix at this time.

Good luck and enjoy!

Yep Spume, tuesday it is for me too, sigh. Keep the faith!
Don't worry, despite it being delivered today, it'll prob be Tuesday before I manage to get the sound anything like acceptable. At the moment it's just jittery and stuttery, repeating each sound several times. This is regardless of what resolution / graphics I'm at, elimintating that it's because the computer's too slow - which it isn't. Seemed really random and forced. I was never a big fan of Family Guy, but at least it seemed to have a few witty remarks on subjects.

Sweet! I wonder if it's legit, though.

Another site I need a friggin account on just to d/l a file. Ugh. Screw it.

Excellent question. Here's the update:

Well, truth be told, neither Trent Reznor nor anyone from Nothing sent those files to Gamespy. Quoting Reznor, "I would never do that and don't support it. Personally, I feel Christian Antkow and Ed Lima did a great job with the sound in the game."

It looks like someone took the alpha, ripped the sounds out, and then put them in the correct order (pak file wise) to make them work with the current game...

Still cool though, and the closest we'll get to hearing them in the final game...

I sent Blue the link, but as it's kinda in a gray area (the sounds coming from a demo that was property of id, and NOT meant for release), I guess he decided not to post it. Can't say I blame him...

I will think peaceful, happy thoughts about getting my new video card RMA'd.

it looks SO like he tried to remake Family Guy, just....poorly. you've got the two kids, but this time the BOY is the smart, unpopular one. They're TRYING to make the daughter more memorable, but failing. They replace Brian (the dog) with a fat alien, and Stewie with a horny goldfish.

In essence, they threw the Family Guy characters into a randomizer and this is what came out. and it wasn't very funny. Maybe the "real thing" will be better.

and NEW Family Guy episodes??!?! that would be SO awesome!

You know...it's odd. Prior to free trade outsourcing wasn't an issue. Since it came to pass, it is. And it gets worse with each passing year. Finding educated people to jobs isn't the problem. Getting educated people to put an end to "free" trade is.

I think there's lots of Family Guy fans here so I thought I would pass this on. (Don't think I've seen it at Blues' before.) It's a clip from Seth McFarlane's new show American Dad. Funny stuff.

There are WAY too many people enrolled in CS degrees who simply do not have the ability to really grasp the information. CS degrees have been dumbed down for these people in many colleges also. Hopefully this will mean more qualifies [sic] degrees, and the degree actually meaning something.
