Morning Q&As

  • John Carmack
    Beyond3D's John Carmack Q&A is not an actual interview with the id lead programmer, but it does collect email responses they've received and found in forum posts relating to DOOM 3, hardware requirements, tweaking, and more.
  • UFO Extraterrestrials
    There's a UFO Extraterrestrials Q&A on WithinGames with the English version of a conversations with Michael Dolezal about the upcoming turn-based strategy game that's also available in German.

For me UFO makes me think of that 70s Gerry Anderson live action Sci Fi show. The one with the girls in shiny purple wigs - I mean that was actually part of the uniform. I loved that show.

UFO Aftermatch was pretty weak. Does anyone know if it was patched or modded to tone down the destruction and make it more enjoyable? (A bit like they should do with the end of Far Cry IMO.)

Aftermath would have been better if it didn't degenerate into "aliens have rocket launchers. aliens kill you" about midgame. I'm sure the sequel will be better. I actually liked Aftermath (post-patched, mind you) until the alien rocket launchers came into play.

I mean, at least with the Blaster Launchers in X-Com you could have ways of not getting killed by them (aka, being sneaky). In Aftermath it's just "oh shit, run" and while you're running from one, they shoot another.

Oh and I meant that everyone is naming their game "UFO <something>" and that relates becuase of UFO: Enemy Unknown. Not implying that it's the same name entirally, but the series is UFO: title. It'd be like naming a game Doom Cyborgs or something.

Okay, so "lead technology" automagically means "graphics programmer"? What about sound, physics, networking... Aren't these parts "technologies" as well?
You know, getting a photo-realistic scenery will come a lot sooner than truly realistic physics.

I would comment on the whole Carmack title thing, but I cannot access the Beyond3D web site So to me, Carmack is just the gopher intern at iD

Since he is doing the same things he was when he was 'just' lead programmer, and in may companies the sole title of the person with his job is lead programmer, what exactly is the importance of this distinction?

Robert Duffy is listed in the official credits as "lead programmer". The distinction is rendering technology versus all of the other work that goes into a game engine. Which is a huge amount.

After the mess that was Aftermath, I still hold out hope that some developer can put out a UFO game that does the original justice. UFO:ET looks pretty cool so far. Then again, I thought Aftermath was gonna be good. Anyway, I'm rooting for you Chaos Concept!

UFO:ET looks promising (even more so from the new screens), but you figure they could come up with a better name than calling it the same thing as the european release of X-com.

<sigh>

It is kind of an important distinction...
