DOOM 3 Under Linux

This DOOM 3 and Winex CVS Instruction Page outlines how to get DOOM 3 up and running under Linux with the help of the WINE not-emulator. The method "requires a lot of work and a good deal of klugery" in the words of Agrajag, who sent this along, but it does provide a chance for those with penguin-powered PCs to check out the game while waiting for the promised official Linux version.

I was amazed at how well it really runs under WINE... And, it
looks incredible... And, everything seems to function
properly... If it looks/plays even BETTER than this natively,
I'll be really amazed... ;-) I've got an Athlon 2700+ and an
nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200, running Red Hat 9... The default
settings chosen were the lowest possible, I think: low-quality
graphics, most optional stuff turned off, etc... But, I was
able to bump it up to medium-quality 800x600, and re-enabled
just about everything, and still get VERY playable framerates... And, it looks simply stunning, of course... ;-)
I haven't seen any serious problems at all, yet... Sometimes,
the sound will get a bit scratchy and stuttery, but I have
really lousy onboard sound on my machine anyway, so it may
just be that, rather than any WINE-related issues...

But, getting it all setup and running is definitely not for
the faint of heart (much like the game itself ;-))... (The
klugiest bit is having to copy into place a ".transgaming"
directory for it to use... They say any old ".wine" dir
will suffice, but I wonder if that's really so... Luckily,
I had an old ".transgaming" dir in my home directory anyway,
from having run a MUCH older version of WineX, long ago, and
it seemed happy to use that... Though, it took me a while to
figure out it wanted the damn thing copied to the main dir
where winex-cvs was installed, and then wanted to do the
copying from there into my home dir itself... ;-))
