If your game has been suffering from stuttering when you go around corners, enter new sections, etc (the so called texture trashing), when your computer goes to 1 frame per 18 seconds, and your harddrive sounds like it might explode, try this :
http://www.forumplanet.com/planetdoom/topic.asp?fid=5733&tid=1440520It works like a fucking charm. Downside is that your install footprint swells to ~4 Gig, but hey, it's become a MUCH smoother playing experience. My processor has enough to do without having to unpack all that crap while in game.

Edit : Note, after doing this, for some reason a few modifications you may have made to your DoomConfig.cfg file seem to be undone. My seta r_displayRefresh "85" had somehow been removed. So make sure to check that.
Also, another thing you could do to maybe increase your framerate a little if you are playing on High Detail, is to modify the line
seta image_anisotropy "8"
I currently have it at "4". It SEEMS to be a tad faster this way, but not really sure. I can't see any difference in the IQ, but then I've never been able to tell the difference between AFx4 and x8.
