Out of the Blue

Man... a midnight snack of Doritos was a really bad call... two Alka Seltzers and a Pepcid later and my heartburn has almost (*burp*) abated. Damn those tempting chips and their deadly powdery coating!

Looks like they're going to need to upgrade the "HOLY SHIT!!" guy from UT for this game..

Would love to see D3 ported to that engine

I think the Doritos were OK. It was the Doom3 salsa with chunks of gibs that upset your stomach.

I avoid them now, but purely because of the calories, not because they make me sick.

Great... now I have a craving for the hot and spicy Dorritos...

Those new “nacho” and “cooler ranch” ~half calorie and carb Doritos are not all that bad actually. Not as good as the original, but not bad.
It is always best to eat as few junk calories as possible, no matter how good of shape you are in.

Something strange about that whole acid thing.

I have a weird acid thingie too, and many of the symptoms are like yours.

My problem is certain citrus fruits, and fats.
In the early stages of it being broken down, they cause my stomach to start producing too much acid. I take medicine twice a day and it stops it, for the most part, but I still cannot take too much fat in at once (but luckily, I can have all the citrus juice’s I want, it stops those good!).

However, if I eat one of those Pepcid things before I partake in the evil stuff? Smooth sailing. The key for me is to eat one at least 10 minutes before heading down the trail.

Again, exactly like me, I take the first pill 5-10 min before breakfast, as prescribed by a doctor (and it tides over until lunch) and the second pill 5-10 min before dinner.

However, I do not believe you have this (maybe something similar), because after fat, the biggest cause of the problem is from caffeine (but the pills do not really seem to help with caffeine at all). Even if I over dose on the medicine I cannot have more than two caffeine drinks a day or it causes serious trouble and I end up throwing up.

Luckily, I was never a huge chocolate fan to begin with.

Yes, because we've all heard of long term Dorritos poisoning. The FDA likes to approve things like that too.

Can you say Olestra? You can thank the US-FDA for approving that one (and I will continue to praise Health Canada for having the good sense to ban its use here).

Food that - along with a host of other negative physiological effects - "may cause involuntary anal leakage" = poison, IMO**.

**comments are not meant to cast aspersions on the quality of Dorritos brand snacking foods as the author is currently eating a bag himself. Furthermore, the author wishes to express his belief that any 'anal leakage' resulting from the consumption of Dorritos brand snacking foods should be considered a voluntary act on the part of the snacker, especially where it can be shown that said snacks were being consumed while playing Doom III. For obvious reasons, the author strongly advises against consuming snacks which contain Olestra while playing Doom III, as severe physical injury resulting in voluntary-involuntary rectal trauma will result.

It is the game.

Whenever you get a new keycard, clear out the current and/or next rooms, backtrack a room, make sure nothing is following you, and then load up your PDA.

Likewise, after exiting your PDA, quickly press a weaon button/key to get that in the cycling memory.

Depressed when I realized I was going straight back to the base...,

Well, I don't know if it's a bug, more of an annoyance... just checking to see that I'm not the only one getting it. When holding my flashlight, and then going into the PDA, when I come back out of the PDA and hit my 'F' key, it doesn't switch back to the last weapon. This has cost me more than one vicious beating at the claws of an imp.

When you have burning and flames shooting out of your throat, that is not your body telling you to take a pepcid, it is your body telling you not to do that stuff in the first place

When you have trouble seeing things at a distance, that's not your body telling you to wear glasses, it is your body telling you not to try and look at anything more than 10 feet from your face.

The human body isn't perfect. We've found ways to help fix or alleviate a lot of those conditions though, and to say that you shouldn't take advantage of modern medicine is foolish. Should you try to avoid things that cause problems? Sure. But that's not always possible.

For instance, my daughter has been on Zantac for nearly 4 months now (she's almost 6 months old). Oh sure, she could've gone without it... but she was screaming in pain before and after every feeding until she was diagnosed with acid reflux and given Zantac twice daily. She's now one of the mellowist kids around. She still spits up tons, but at least she's not in pain doing so. And yes, she's on 100% breast milk. She should grow out of acid reflux in the next 1-7 months, but until then she's much better off on the meds than without.

I think they are poisonous but when you are young your stomach just takes the pain. You keep eating them because the MSG is addictive

Yes, because we've all heard of long term Dorritos poisoning. The FDA likes to approve things like that too.

And there's no freaking MSG in them either. My body cannot process MSG (as many people of European descent cannot) -- give me some and I'll have a migraine headache within the hour. Never had a migraine or any other ill side effect from eating Dorritos, Cheatos, or other processed snack foods. I avoid them now, but purely because of the calories, not because they make me sick.

Great... now I have a craving for the hot and spicy Dorritos...

a midnight snack of Doritos was a really bad call

There must be something to Dooming with Dorito's as I too consumed quite a quantity during my initial foray into the game. I don't usually eat them but my wife, quite out of character, picked up a HUGE bag from Costco that very day, and naturally, I felt obligated to consume them. Interestingly, I watched every video and kiosk in the game (they are all very well done IMO) and it was at these times that Dorito consumption was engaged full throttle. I, however, did not experience any heartburn, but it may have been the 3-4 beers consumed in tandem that offered some relief.

Same thing happened to me with Cheetos. I loved those things. Ate them every week. Then one day when I was old I sat down with a bag of Cheetos, ate a handful or so, and was sick for the rest of the day. Happens every time now.

I was like that as a kid. When I was little (5-10 YO) I loved them. Now I can't look at a bag w/o getting a sick feeling in my stomach.

People funny. When you have burning and flames shooting out of your throat, that is not your body telling you to take a pepcid, it is your body telling you not to do that stuff in the first place. Would you rather live in a nice house or a house that is partially burned down? Charcoal timbers, smoke, ashes floating around in it?

Those doritos? I think it is age. I think they are poisonous but when you are young your stomach just takes the pain. You keep eating them because the MSG is addictive. Same thing happened to me with Cheetos. I loved those things. Ate them every week. Something strange about that whole acid thing.

I can drink gallons of regular black coffee, right up to bed time. No problem. I'm told that people with acid reflux can't do that.

I eat half of a slice of peperoni or something with tomato sauce at 5:00 PM and WHAM! I'm in pain.

I drink OJ, even the low acid stuff at any time of the day? Same result - burning for hours.

I have to look out for OJ, Gatorade, and drinking too many Tom Collins (my fav)...I wake up shooting flames out of my throat.
