not to point out the simple, i i did not read every post on this thread but i had the same problem with my ATI 9600 pro untill i got the lates drivers

wxp-w2k-8-03-040610a-016126c.exe

that is the file name.
After i installed it has been running like a little girl from "Old Painless" or Bat out of Hell take your pick.

if you have updated the drivers i have noticed that evan if i set my AGP to 8x the software switches it back to 4x but i don' notic any diffrences in the perfomance

Yeah, I'm stuck on the part where you have to enter a code to open Junction 05. I read the Prima guide the other day while at a local gaming store, and it said the code was 953, so I wrote it down and tried it when I got home: nothing. I've spent about half an hour of time (time wasted, I might add) punching in random three-digit codes so i could get on playing the greatest game of 2004. I've posted on about 3 other boards, no one seems to reply though. Can someone give me the code, or just tell me what to do if entering the code isn't the right thing to do? Thanks.

OK guys, listen, the SMARTGART thing doesn't actually do anything. The ATI card will run at whatever you set AGP to IN YOUR BIOS

This is true, on a hardware level. However, on a VIA chipset, if the SMARTGART is turned to off, I think on a driver level it won't work.
If AGP was set to off in your BIOS I don't think you'd even get any image on your monitor. Kinda hard for the processor to talk to the graphics card that way.

I think you're right Creston, the first place I looked when I couldn't get things running right was to make sure the AGP was enabled at 8x in the bios. It was and it made no difference until I installed (or possibly re-installed) those 4 in 1 drivers. Btw, my motherboard is an Asus K8V Deluxe.

I hate shrooms, one bad trip and those things are dead to you. blech... Salvia extract is very simple to make; the first time I bought cacti off the internet, they sent me a half ounce of salvia for free, so me and a friend made salvia 14x. I wont call it a mistake to smork that, but you only need to once. Wow.

The companies will be very pleased.

Er...it usually means the game is solely using the texture memory of the graphics card and not utilizing the system's memory for anything excess.

Game can still run, though...

IF it never needs more at any one time than your card has onboard. In his case, any game that doesn't need more than 256Megs of texture memory would be fine. Anything that goes over that and you're going to get...hmmm, dunno really, BSODs, texture corruption, something of that kind?
Without the AGP bus being turned 'on' for memory transfers, I don't even think you could use your swap file for graphics purposes.

To be honest, I've never EVER encountered a situation where the AGP port was turned off...

As for those unreal screenshots, I will NEVER trust another screenshot for anything called Unreal. Remember all those Unreal 2 screenshots that they kept hyping as being "in engine, gameplay screenshots"?
Ofcourse, the fact that the screenshot was taken at 3600x2400 resolution with 16xFSAA and 48xAF was never mentioned. Similar for these screenshots. When the actual engine comes around it's going to look a billion times less spectacular.

Maybe I'm just cynical.

seta g_projectileLights "1"
seta g_muzzleFlash "1"
seta g_showPlayerShadow "1"

I have those set... put them in my autoexec.cfg before running the game even.

Going to turn off player shadow though -- it looks like ass. If you have it on and look at your feet then you see this disembodied shadow (since your own body is never rendered). It's odd in a number of other places too.

And projectile lights doesn't seem to do very much either.

So, have you reinstalled your older card just to play? I know I wouldn't.

No, that's tonight. The new one blipped out on me three times last night: once during D3, once surfing the web, and once just opening windows explorer. I'm not going through that shit all weekend.

From complicity:

Hey nin, have you seen this yet?

it's 8.5 megs though.

Oh, hell yeah...been playing that for a few days now...when Reznor delivers, HE DELIVERS.

I will think peaceful, happy thoughts about my new video card, in hopes that it will work.

How this option ever got set to off in the first place is probably one of the great mysteries of the universe...

Until last week or so, and I really hate to admit this, my card (9800XP) had been running at 0x AGP since the day I put my system together in Febuary. The Smartgart feature that tests for stability before allowing a change in the AGP settings simply wouldn't allow me to run any higher, but since it seemed to work fine I pretty much just forgot about it. "

OK guys, listen, the SMARTGART thing doesn't actually do anything. The ATI card will run at whatever you set AGP to IN YOUR BIOS. Mine also won't go above "off" in Smartgart, yet AGP 8x is certainly on, and Doom's ability to quickly send textures makes this clear (9800 pro, 3000xp cpu, 1gig ram, 1024x768 Ultrahigh timedemo = 25fps)

BTW, while Carmack is right that overclocking the video card is harder with Doom 3 (I can't do it anymore at least), Doom is very CPU heavy, and I was able to overclock my 3000xp from 2100mhz to 2310 without problems, giving me a 10fps boost when I'm not fillrate limited. It also SEEMS to help in MP alot.

Feh.

I finally enabled all this after reading it yet again on another site and it.......causes my system to crash. It does not matter what I set the "cacheMegs" setting at, the default 20 or anything else, I crash to desktop (I do not even get the main menu to load up) if I have "useCaceh" enabled.

Oh well, I will just have to settle for my already great performance.

image_useCache
image_cacheMegs
image_cacheMinK

Controls memory set aside for temporary loading of full-sized precompressed images and files.

WARNING - When set incorrectly this can cause Doom3 to crash at startup or cause instability/graphical artifacts in game.

Set cache megs to a higher value if you have 512 megabytes or more of system RAM. Guideline is 1/6 to 1/4 of your system RAM.

Set image_cacheMinK to 2048, this can be lower but may cause Doom3 to crash.

Set image_useCache to 1 to enable background load image caching

-from the UpsetChaps Doom3 Guide found above in the news. Worth a mention I guess.

Er...you saw the preview movies, right?

I would say two, at most three, years out.

For scale, look at what Far Cry is already doing.

For graphics, just look at what Doom 3 does now and/or how quickly things improve. Remember watching Half-Life 2 a year ago (when it was supposed <cough> to come out)? It was absolutely stunning.

Now? Looks good, but nowhere near amazing as it did. And that is only in one year of time...

Noting the 512MB cards are just a few months off,

The Smartgart feature that tests for stability before allowing a change in the AGP settings simply wouldn't allow me to run any higher, but since it seemed to work fine I pretty much just forgot about it.

In an ootb last week Ray started stating his 3DMark03 scores, which were higher than mine with less cpu power, so I figured with D3 coming out I'd better fix things. Turns out I must have forgotten to install the Via 4 in 1 drivers when I first fired up my system because once I installed them last week I was able to set the AGP at 8x (my 3DMark03 score went from the low 5300's to the high 6800's). And those are just the Via drivers that came on the motherboard's install disc, I have no idea how current they are.

Now that I know what caused the problem I'm with Creston in wondering how everything worked so well without the proper drivers installed.

I do that too! The first time, I crouched down and punched a body right in the junk, and it popped and fizzled. I laughed for five minutes after that every time I saw another body.
