Carmack on DOOM 3 & Q3A OpenSource

This Slashdot post from John Carmack (thanks shul and Frans) offers his reflections on the release of DOOM 3, as he proudly says: "I think it is the best game we have ever made, and it exceeded all of my expectations." A subsequent reply from the id Software lead programmer on the subject of the OpenSource release of Quake III Arena, states: "By the end of the year. There are still a lot of higher priority things, but it is coming soon. Hopefully punkbuster will keep the source release from having any negative impact on the player community." Here's a bit more from the first post on id's near-future roadmap:
Amidst all the various Doom ports and expansions, we are starting up on our next game. It will have a new rendering engine, which will be keeping me busy for a while, but the only other thing we are saying for now is that it won't be a sequel to any of our previous work. We have a really solid team that did a lot of maturing through Doom's development, so I have high hopes that it won't be another four year odyssey.

I really wanted to love this game. I really did. For about the first two hours I did. The initial takeover sequence is great, it really gives the feel of the game as an excerpt from Aliens. That I liked. Then it turns into:

Goto Level 1 of Alpha Labs
okay goto Level 2 of Alpha Labs
okay goto Level 3 of Alpha Labs

and so on and so forth. Honestly, if this game has exceeded John Carmack's expectations, then he and his people at iD should just work on the engine and leave game production to the real creative teams. This is a tech demo, nothing more.

Lemme get this straight, you have people designing plasma weapons, turning iron oxide into hydrogen and water, and nobody can make a shotgun with a flashlight on it? Hell, even miners have lights mounted on their helmets since Thomas Edison. UAC may want to put a little R & D into that.

For all of you that have yet to buy the game, you can easily recreate it: Go in your living room around midnight, pull all the blinds down. Buy a two dollar flashlight and stand in the center of your living room. Have your friends quietly walk around you, every once in a while yelling in your ear and punching you in the face. You can punch back, but you have to shut the light off first. There yah go, all kinds of money saved.

Not to mention the worst sounding shotgun in the history of shotgun noises.

This game is like low-carb pancakes and syrup. It looks great till you sink your teeth into it, and you realize disappointed is the best you can feel about the whole thing.
