Diplomacy & Squad Leader Games

Paradox Entertainment announces plans to develop and publish PC games based on the Diplomacy and Squad Leader board and computer games from Avalon Hill. Here's the deal:
Recognizing the strong worldwide awareness of the Diplomacy® and Squad Leader® brands, Paradox Entertainment AB today announced that it has licensed the worldwide rights from Atari, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATAR) and Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE:HAS) to develop and publish new PC games based on the successful Avalon Hill board and video games. The Avalon Hill line of games is managed by Hasbro’s subsidiary, Wizards of the Coast.

Hailed as two of the best known strategy game brands in the world, Diplomacy® and Squad Leader® have attracted millions of players in their previous editions. Internal teams at Paradox, known for specializing in the creation of strategy games, will develop the new PC games. Past Paradox projects include the award-winning Europa Universalis®, Hearts of Iron™ and Crusader Kings™.

“We will be working closely with Atari and Wizards of the Coast to make sure we maximize the potential these brands have. We feel that Paradox is the right partner to develop the PC Games these brands and their fans deserve”, says Theodore Bergquist, CEO of Paradox Entertainment.

You got that right; a terrible, terrible game that was. All I could think of at the time was the squandered potential.

Here's to hoping they get it right.

Agreed. Unfortunately, however, there's something in this first press release that is a Very Bad Sign:

"...to make sure we maximize the potential these brands have."

That sounds suspiciously like "we're gonna dumb it down so far, your short-yellow-bus-riding cousin will be able to play it."

Too bad the guys at Battlefront couldn't get this license. I have no doubt they'd do it justice.

In other words, get ready for these classic turn-based games to be turned into discount RTS trash.

Paradox does not create bargin bin RTS trash. These guys know strategy games. Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron are some of the most complex and deep games on the market.

then you don't know Paradox.
These guys make possibly the most historically interesting and detailed worldwide strategic simulations...I think they'll do a decent job of porting these two games.

I loved diplomacy when I was a kid. All the double crossing and alliances were cool. It just took weeks to play.

I wonder what kind of chaos will ensue if they recreate Diplomacy while keeping true to the form of the game. You can screw people so bad in Diplomacy...and doing it when you're sitting there face to face is bad enough. This interweb thingamabob will make mercy laughable.
