I too have a 9800XT 256. Have Overdrive on with the new drivers and no heat problems here. Card remains quite cool even from hours of play of Doom III at around 69 degrees. Then again I do 4 fans on my system. Your card could be defective.

I too have them. Radeon 9800XT 256mb NOT overclocked.
First I was able to play the game for about 2 hours untill I was getting those sparkles.. now it starts directly at the start. SO WEIRD! My case is always open.. and now I even have my room vent next to it! Doesn't help.
I wonder to whom I should be angry to.. Doom 3 engine or ATI..?

THIS SUCKS! Can't play Doom 3 without fearing that my Radeon might 'blow up'!!

Aniso controlled within Doom 3 with pull-down command image_anisotropy does have a noticable, real-time effect on game textures, so there is some kind of aniso being provided by the game if not overridden by the ATI display properties tab. However, it's poor quality compared tp the aniso implemented via the ATI tab control, even when using "performance" aniso setting. Using the ATI tab to control aniso will provide much better quality (even on "performance" setting), but slows the game way down.
I wonder what kind of aniso is implemented via the Doom 3 software setting and why it looks so much worse than using the ATI tab to set aniso...

Just wrote a huge note that got deleted.....

Bottom line- set aniso from the ATI display properties tab with ATI drivers. With 4.7 or 4.9, Doom 3's aniso set by "High" detail is not aniso. I don't know what it is, but is looks like trilinear only. If u don't believe me, try just the Doom 3 software set to "High" detail, which should create 8X aniso. It won't. Look at textures with legible writing from an angle, comapring software-driven aniso to aniso set with the ATI tab. No contest; doesn't matter if tab is set to qual or perf.

The 4.9 has been running faster for all of you b/c it seems to kill any trace of aniso that would be set by doom 3 "High" setting. Use the ATI tab to set aniso. 4.9 using the ATI tab to set aniso runs faster than 4.7 using the ATI tab to set aniso. You'll see. You won't want to rely on Doom 3's software-driven 8X whateverthef? filtering engaged with the "High" setting.

Further- use the ATI control panel to set anti-aliasing after turning it off in Doom 3. Set temporal anti-aliasing 2X instead of "plain" 2X, not only looks better but runs ~3fps faster on my rig w/demo1 timedemo.

I have a 2.6 GHz P4, Win XP, 512MB RAM, and a Radeon 9600. No matter what i do the game just keeps crashing. I tried the new catalyst drivers but that just made it crash more. Plus when I run the timedemo, i get about 15 fps on medium quality at 800x600. Is this typical for a machine like mine?

With the 4.9 beta opengl .dll file, I find the game highly playable @ 1280X1024, ULTRA qual., 2X anti-aliasing, all adv. options "on", even with my partially 1+ year old rig. I do not use "Overdrive." I use Radlinker tab in display properties (creating a Radlink will sometimes cause a crash) set to CORE: 530; RAM: 591 for my vid card. Of course, there is an initial "hitch" whenever one enters a room with new textures at ULTRA quality. Timedemo demo1 = 39 FPS (the second time). Obviously, timedemo demo1 only gives an average framerate. It cannot tell you the min FPS as a function of total measured FPS. Although I only get 39, the framerate never seems to drop very low.

At HIGH qual. with all other settings the same as above, I get 48+ FPS. HIGH is also very playable at 1600X1200, 2x anti-aliasing!

Anyone know of the best way to cool the X800 XT's RAM? There is nothing on the card to sufficiently cool the RAM when overclocking. If there was, I'm sure I could go to 620+ on the RAM clock.

#53 You are not reasoning correctly. Of course you run the timedemo twice. It takes the same amount of time to load the textures when you're actually playing as it does during the timedemo, but when you're playing the pause is a split second for every new element, which are spaced out much more during play, and then the game doesn't need to load that same element again for the rest of the level.

So, for a split second, your fps is less than what can be expected from the result of the second timedemo, but after that split second pause your fps will be at the second timedemo speeds.

The hitching I see the first time I run the timedemo (IF I don't run the timedemo while playing the level, and therefore when all the textures, effects, etc. are already loaded) I rarely notice while playing.

The most accurate benchmark, via timedemo demo1, of your actual gameplay experience is acheived by running the timdemo at least twice. Ignore any results where you see hitching (unless your card hitches constantly during play).

Actully you only get slowdown on the first part of the timedemo, but it drags down the average FPS for the rest of the demo. Unless you continuiosly keep swapping between new levels in single player, the 2nd test is more accurate.

I wouldn't run the timedemo twice, yes you get better results the seccond time round but when you play the single player game the textures are loaded in as you play it seems. I believe that the first time you run the timedemo is a good simulation of how the game will behave when you actually play it in single player mode.

So for you to get the same results while playing as you do with your 'seccond timedemo' you would have to play each level twice, UNLESS we are benchmarking for multiplayer in which case after you run around the maps once you should get the same results as your 'seccond timedemo'. I'm certainly no expert btw and the above is just theory, but I'm pretty sure this is the case.

I have a 9500-->9700 softmod. without the beta drivers, I get 30.3 at 1024x medium quality. the new opengl driver file, put in the Doom3 folder, causes Doom3 to crash out with "card does not support blah blah blah". removing the file from the doom3 folder fixes it, and the game runs perfectly.
basically, I'm asking if anyone with a 9500 NON softmodded has tried out the file, and does it work? I'm wondering if it's:
A) the card completely doesn't work with this driver, which is semi-surprising but nothing to cry about.

B) The softmodded drivers somehow interfere with this non-softmod driver version's openGL file, causing wackiness to ensue.

I really am not TOO worried about which one the problem is caused by. with the 4.7 softmodded drivers, I get acceptable framerates in-game...far better than this card should rightfully produce.

Edit: tested this theory on roommate's 9600. identical failure. either just copying the file to the D3 directory DOESN'T work, or cards below the 9800 level were (pick one) ignored or forgotten. again, not crying about it, just stating what I've found.

Anywho, updated my motherboard drivers.. no change.. Removed a ram chip (And set my bios to 8x AGP), no change. Replace the ram chip and increased my AGP arpater size to 256mb.. no change..

Is there some "Suck-Not Suck" dipswitch I missed?

High Quality 800x600, 4x AA, 4.9 beta drivers = 34.0

Well, without AA, it's running pretty nice.. I'll try pumping it up another screen resolution..

High Quality 1024x768, No AA, 4.9 beta drivers = 42.1
High Quality 1024x768, 4x AA, 4.9 beta drivers = 24.9

I'll check to see if my motherboard and soundcard drivers are up to date, and then try pulling one of the ram chips if that doesn't smooth it out.. I'm guessing my vid card just sucks for some reason.. (Probably why I got it for so cheap :D)
