Vivendi Gets Irrational

Vivendi Universal Games announces a new deal with developer Irrational Games:
VIVENDI UNIVERSAL GAMES SIGNS NORTH AMERICAN DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT WITH IRRATIONAL GAMES

LOS ANGELES – August 2, 2004 – Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) and Irrational Games today announced a North American agreement which grants VU Games exclusive distribution rights to Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich.

Scheduled for release in early 2005, Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich is the PC sequel to the original, critically acclaimed role-playing game, Freedom Force. Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich brings dynamic storytelling, fast-paced tactical role-play, and larger-than-life heroic characters to the computer screen.

"Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich is a highly anticipated release that we believe will generate significant demand at retail," said Philip W. O'Neil, North American President of VU Games. "Irrational's decision to partner with VU Games is another endorsement for our North American publishing and distribution capabilities."

"When we decided to self-publish Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich, we knew the game we wanted to make and how we wanted to make it," said Ken Levine, General Manager of Irrational Games. "What we didn't know was how to get it into the hot little hands of all the Freedom Force fanatics! This partnership is the final piece of that puzzle."

Further details about Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich will be available in coming months. For more information about the game, visit www.freedomfans.com.

How should I know? Perhaps also ask why it took so long from Shock to Shock 2?

Or how about the opposite question - why would EA go for a Shock 3, when Shock 2 didn't earn them the money they wanted?

"But they'd be stupid not to make it. Shock 3 is inevitable."

...he says, five years after SS2 was released. What, may I ask, is EA waiting for? Irrational have apparently wanted to do it for a while, so why hasn't EA accomodated them?

Yes, Ken has stated publically a number of times that he has a great design document for Shock 3 should the chance to make it arise. We can (and do) hope, but the existance of a design doc does not imply that the game will ever be made.

System Shock 2 = Awesome
Freedom Force= BLECH

Why would Vivendi waste their time with a publishing agreement? You'd think Blizzard would be enough to not have to go after small, one-hit-wonders.
Uh, Irrational is hardly a one-hit wonder. For starters several of their staff had their hands in a number of the great Looking Glass titles, and both Shock 2 and Freedom Force were successful. Shock 2 made a reasonable profit, but I rather suspect that Freedom Force was a much bigger commercial success.

Freedom Force was awesome -- if you like that sort of game. Which vast numbers of people did. I'm highly encouraged by the news that Irrational are self-publishing the sequel... the fan base is in place to make it a success for them, and it indicates that the company is already doing nicely. If FFvTR turns out better than the original (which is should do, especially given that the company can take their time with it), and Tribes Vengeance and SWAT 4 turn out well (remains to be seen, of course -- both games have decidedly large boots to fill), then Irrational will have made a very impressive name for themselves I think.

The problem with SS3 is that when LG got sold off, so did some of the licenses and some where kept by the laywers, if I recall.
A post at Irrational, was talking about an interview Ken had done explaining how he had hired some (lawyers?) to investigate.
Trying to find/get all the numerous holders of the license together, but he gave up after a lengthy time of not finding much and creating a large bill for the search.

According to John (mod), on Irratoinals forum awhile ago when this came up said, He was almost postive that EA had sold there rights to SS3.
The whole Irrational fourm is down right now or I get the quote.
Thou this proabaly isnt true since, this week EA sent the letter to System Shock: Reloaded team.

About 6 months ago I mentioned, I heard Ken Levine had already completed the script for SS3.
I went on to mention he had scripted the story for Thief DP, SS2 and I mistakenly mentioned he had worked on the script for SS the orginal.
He is regestered here and apparently saw that, corrected me and went on to list all the talented guys whom did develop SS.
He didnt correct me about the SS3 scrip thou :p

Well considering that Irrational is using a modified UT2003 engine to do Tribes: Vengeance, I'd think that they'd opt for the next gen Unreal tech for System Shock 3. Personally, from what I've seen, I like the look of that engine better than Doom3.

Don't shoot me, but I'm looking forward to the new Freedom Force game more than Doom.

Technically, a copyright holder must defend the copyright, or they forfeit it. So it doesn't mean they are for sure working on anything.

But they'd be stupid not to make it. Shock 3 is inevitable.

That might mean that they are making a System Shock game themselves. Otherwise they wouldn't care.

I don't mind if System Shock 3 uses the Doom 3 engine, better yet the Half-Life 2 Source engine!

I just know they're making it, and I can not wait!

If EA owns the System Shock rights, and Irrational has signed with Vivendi, that's makes it pretty unlikely Irrational will make System Shock 3, doesn't it?

Dammit.

Not that I've had much hope after all these years.

There are a bunch of mods for SS2 that upgrade the models (Rebirth mod) and textures (Shtup mod).

You might want to check them out, they make it look a lot more current (although not a patch on Doom3 ).

Freedom FORCE for Christ's sake, the brilliant superhero game, not EA's Freedom Fighters... please DO NOT CONFUSE THOSE. (even though Freedom Fighters wasn't that bad either)

No 'agreement' is ever a waste of time... unless you're dealing with THQ, then it's straight suicide.

Anyhow, why wouldn't any company want to acquire rights to publish stuff? Especially when it's a company that has proven they can do the job uner limited circumstances with exerimental gear.
Such was the case with System Shock 2.

In the case of Freedom Fighters, I thought it was a decent game, though there were things about the gameplay that could have been improved. Somewhat like The Thing.

I hope this spells success for Irrational, because I know that anybody who has played either (or both) of the SS games is wondering, hoping, praying for the next one.

Haha, I thought about ss3 immediately when I saw this. I read somewhere like 2 years ago that they might make ss3 for playstation 2 only or some crap like that. At least we know that won't happen. Hopefully someone there knows about their massive fan base and decides that it would be a very good decision to make this game...

It would be incredibly interesting to see who would win the duel - id with Doom3 or Irrational with Shock3, both using the D3 engine.

I dream of the horror.

SYSTEM SHOCK 3?

Hello?

Nice shiny new engine coming out for it too, right about.......................NOW

LOL. I said the same thing after the last Doom vid was released over the weekend. Forget System Shock 3 for a moment, I would cream my pants of someone simply took System Shock 2 and updated it to the Doom 3 engine and graphics. I would PAY money for such a mod

Edit: Irrational even released a patch the allowed for co-op play on SS2
