ok - just lost the long e-mail - overwrote it with my new password via copy - yes I are a genius!!! ha ha !!
But at least I can get win 98 SE to run with almost zero '0' crahses unlike the other IT pro (hmmm!) above.
short summary of win xp over win 98 SE
no time to edit all your info
win xp has only a few advantages e.g. edit 4 gig files
I run 3 desktops & 2 laptops on a LAN at home.
had a large data company - up to 300 people
1 runs downloads all day
only reboot every 20 - 60 days!!
& only for software upgrades,
almost never crashes.
only 1 computer crashes and it is when I am adding many progs and/or have excessive windows open.
this still only happens a few times
OK earlier IT guy that's 5 computers and almost no crashes except on 1 when it is abused. Perhaps retraining is in order or you are UNLUCKY!!
to upgrade all my progs even with a very good upgrade install by the xp upgrade option
I would still need 50 hours to get all the software running and all the drivers updated.
If the upgrade does not go well it could be many more hours
I also have a great backup method that will not work in XP
I could figure out how but this would take 10-20 hours!
Bottom line - too many hours for very little gain.
So as suggested earlier run XP on another partition or hard drive.
I run it (a copy given to me by a client who wanted me to train hime via phone) on a seperate hard drive.
I have many reasons to do it this way versus a partition but have no time to explain this.
And note that M$ is now suppoting 98SE until June 2006!!
So it would have been proper for ID to allow it to run on 98SE unless there is some big prob with this.
