No Win98 DOOM 3

In today's (unusually late) DOOM 3 newsbit, a post on PlanetDOOM confirms from Activision that DOOM 3 will not run under Windows 98 or Win98SE, but that Windows XP or Windows 2000 will be required.

As an IT manager, I have 2 buildings, and about 300 users. Because of the nature of my business, many people bring in their own private computers, and I have to support them. (Real Estate Agents) I've seen nearly every POS PC/Laptop made in the past 6-7 years. Guess which ones require the most support?? WINDOWS 89/ME. In fact, the problems we were having with Windows 98 / ME machines were so damn bad, that we finally banned it from our buildings and network. We no longer support anything less than Windows 2000, and everything we own and operate (as far as desktops) is XP Pro. All of our servers are 2000/2003 and they run like charms.

98 = Lockups, blue screens, FAT32 (lol), and ever-shrinking support. Try running a business network with 98/ME clients. What a freaking nightmare.

I've been working in IT since 1992. I have been gaming ONLINE since Quake was in beta. (played Wolfy and Doom and all those prior to true online gamine) I ran 2000 once they stabilized it completely with service packs. Worked great for gaming. When it was available, I got a Release Canditate of Windows XP, and never looked back. I upgraded to the final version when is came out I've been gaming on it ever since and it's been rock solid. Worst thing I have delt with is crappy drivers. My computer at home is gamed on daily and is powered up 24 hours a day. I go months without reboots. Try that on 98/ME.

Those of you who live in some fantasy world where Windows 98 is better than XP need to wake up and join the rest of us in the modern world. For christ sakes, go become a Linux dork if you must, but don't stick to 98 because you think it makes you a "hardcore gamer". Take it it from people who work with these OS's all day, every day for a living, and have been gaming on it since it came out. XP is rock solid.

This reminds me of the Linux dorks who complain about Windows XP. Their list of complaints shrinks with every new version of Windows. Half of them still make arguments that don't even apply to Windows XP. Of course people find security leaks in Windows. It's the most used desktop in the world, and also the most targeted by the people intersted in finding security leaks. I've run several flavors of Linux in the past. Mandrake, Red Hat, Debian, etc. I got as many security updates for those as I did for Windows. Especially Red Hat.

As for the PLAYED OUT "Microsoft is an Evil Empire" Bs excuse.... give me a break. Look around your house at all the major name brand you have purchased. You think Microsoft is the only company in the world that uses strongarm tactics in business sometimes? Pull your head out and learn about the world, junior.

He cut the possum's face off then cut around the eye socket. In the center of the belt buckle, where the possum's eye would be, he has placed a small piece of wood from his old '52 Ford's home made railroad tie bumper. Damn, he misses that truck.
