When I had Windows 98, it crashed at minimum twice a day. In December of 2001, I upgraded to what was at the time a damn near top of the line system - 1.5GHz P4, 256MB RAM, Geforce2 Ultra, and WinME. WinME didn't crash as much as 98 - it was only once a day with ME. But the thing to consider is that 98 was technically outdated at this point - and my system with ME doesn't even meet the bare minimum requirements for Doom 3 today. 98 is effectively obsolete; anyone with a system up to running Doom 3 should be running XP. I've been using XP since I built my new comp this January, and it's hardly ever crashed.
