No Win98 DOOM 3

In today's (unusually late) DOOM 3 newsbit, a post on PlanetDOOM confirms from Activision that DOOM 3 will not run under Windows 98 or Win98SE, but that Windows XP or Windows 2000 will be required.

ID SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THIS A LONG FUCKING TIME AGO!

No I don't think they should have. The majority of gamers will already have WinXP or Win2k. The majority of people that have systems that will even be able to run Doom 3 will have WinXP or Win2k.

Hell even the majority of people still playing a 6 year old game have upgraded to WinXP.

My first PC was a tandy 1000, been working up since that...

That doesnt change the fact that I still dont believe you've never had even one BSoD, unless your using it for only documents and such theres no way thats possible. Win98 was inherently unstable. If you kept uptimes of more then a few days the system would rapidly decline in perfomance, and you would see even more likelyhood of a BSoD.

This isnt so on XP, you can leave it on for weeks and never notice any decline in the processing.

Very nice title you chose there...

When I had Windows 98, it crashed at minimum twice a day. In December of 2001, I upgraded to what was at the time a damn near top of the line system - 1.5GHz P4, 256MB RAM, Geforce2 Ultra, and WinME. WinME didn't crash as much as 98 - it was only once a day with ME. But the thing to consider is that 98 was technically outdated at this point - and my system with ME doesn't even meet the bare minimum requirements for Doom 3 today. 98 is effectively obsolete; anyone with a system up to running Doom 3 should be running XP. I've been using XP since I built my new comp this January, and it's hardly ever crashed.

Clearly the answer here is...

COMMUNISM!

I swear it works! We can rile the support of the masses to burn the houses of Bill Gates and paint the streets red with the blood of the swine that ride the working class to death for their own personal gain. We shall set up Communist factions in each major city around the states, recruiting only the most fervent believers who will carry out orders without question. A major propaganda campaign with soften up the public for the cause before the military strikes are issued from the guerilla bases set up in the Andes and Rockies. Once Washington is captured, the current government will be disposed of and I shall be placed as the Supreme Overlord of the Red Empire. Churches and movie theatres will be destroyed, the Red Army will seize all private property, and hordes of gold and millions of dollars in hard currency will flow into our vast chambers so we can live like kings for the rest of our lives!!

So who's with me?

XP uses some form of copy-protection that prevents me from using the same CD on more than one computer on my network, doesn't it?????!!!!!!

You XP people want to look for a downside, THAT IS A BIG FUCKING DOWNSIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Edit: Things to do tommorrow

1. Send a flaming, scathing, hate-erupting letter to Carmack for not talking about this earlier
2. Find my $90 copy of XP
3. Sell soul to Satan in exchange for cash
4. Use cash to buy shares in Microsoft
5. Use Microsoft dividend money to pay for XP on my other computers.

PS My drink was full and now its empty. I go get another one now. Lets see, a white russian, that's 4 parts vodka and 3 parts more vodka, right?

Now, can someone explain to me why I should get XP, others than "its there".

Because you're a gamer and modern games no longer run on win98. I upgraded a year and a half ago and don't really have any regrets. I'd like to be able to play a few older DOS games but it's not the end of the world. Stability is the big advantage, the only crashes I ever get are heat related where as in WIN98 I recall having a crash pretty much daily.

As for the Blue Screen of Death that you all talk about...well, without insult to you all, I'll simply say, I've never had one in the whole 6 years of running Win 98, and that is the truth

We (soon to be former, *&^%) Win98 users are pissed off, not because we don't want to run WinXP (if it was free I would have updated long ago) but because ID SHOULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT THIS A LONG FUCKING TIME AGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem...we budgeted out what we needed to play the latest games based on shared assumptions, and now we are at least 90 bucks short. FUCK FUCK FUCK

Anyone know if I can just upgrade my gaming/dsl/server to XP and keep my 2 client machines running 98se? Otherwise I'm looking to need 1 Pro edition and 2 home editions, eh??!! 350 bucks I'm really gonna need now???!!! &^*I%&U^$^&(%^&%^&%$*%(%&^%*^*^*&^%&^*&^*&^%$%^$%#^%.....

WinXP is godly. Never crashes for me, doesn't start losing 15 minutes every hour if I leave it on over 24 hours... simply an ideal OS. Blows all competition, including Linux, out of the water for general use.

For general use.

And true gamers do not dual boot 98. True gamers have a 486 DX/2 or a Pentium 90 laying around to play the classics.

I agree 110%. I never once had a problem with XP Pro. I can leave this bitch on for a week straight and still start up a game without a hitch.

And as for "true gamers". Everyone knows you can have an emulator downloaded in minutes, and play EVERY GAME ever created practically in just seconds. /me loves MAME32

I have an elderly client who I recently helped purchase a new system and convert her old data over.

She practically begged me to install Win95 on a brand-new HP system.

People cling to stuff they know even if it ain't all that.

Heh, this has got to be one of the funniest threads on Blues that I've read in a long time.. keep 'em coming.

Oh and btw, anyone who says they have used 98 for 6 years and never had even one BSOD is either lying, or you never installed one program besides windows itself.

Maybe he only got the Black Screen of Death or the Big Freeze.. I got those along with the Blue SoD.

No Dark I don't...you must need to learn to use a PC properly so you don't have to reboot because of a BSoD.

I'll also state some cool trivia about myself...Never have I ever ran any Anti Virus protection and I've never ever gotten a virus in all my years of computing...that's simply because I know how to play the game...simple really, if you know how to play. Am I lucky, probably so, but that's o.k. with me...maybe my luck will run out someday, maybe it won't.

If you want Win98 that badly, boot up a dual OS of XP AND 98...then you can play doom 3 and still get your BSOD at the same time!

Oh and btw, anyone who says they have used 98 for 6 years and never had even one BSOD is either lying, or you never installed one program besides windows itself.

98 gives BSOD's, its inevitable, 6 years without ONE BSOD? You have a wild imagination man...

O.k., lets get some things straight...Win98 is not crap ware, and Win XP isn't crap ware.

You all are something else...to me, Win 98 has it's goods and bads and so does XP. As for the Blue Screen of Death that you all talk about...well, without insult to you all, I'll simply say, I've never had one in the whole 6 years of running Win 98, and that is the truth.

I hold onto Win98 because I can play games going back to pre 1996 on it...you can get very little games prior to that year to work on XP...heck, it's hard enough (with work arounds it's possible though) to get any games prior to 1998 to work on XP.

Saying Win98 is a piece of crap and you need to get rid of it...well, that's just simply absurd. That's like saying, "You're Atari is crapware, get rid of that stupid thing, you moron." My Atari still holds a place in my heart and so do several games that I still play on it.

I'm not saying for those that have Win98 not to upgrade, on the contrary...but hold on to it if you are a legendary gamer like myself and enjoy games from your youth upward.

Also...if you do not have the funds to upgrade right away, be patient...Thief 3 was not supported for Win98, but within about a months time of release, an amateur programmer came up with the solution and I ran it under Win98 with better performance than those on WinXP...eat that XP fanboys...and unsupported OS ran it better than a supported OS. I'm not bias to either OS, but I thought that was a shame, that a game would run better and have less bugs on an unsupported OS than a supported one...so for those of you that are STUCK with Win98, wait til someone finds the workaround...it'll run on Win98, eventually.
