No Win98 DOOM 3

In today's (unusually late) DOOM 3 newsbit, a post on PlanetDOOM confirms from Activision that DOOM 3 will not run under Windows 98 or Win98SE, but that Windows XP or Windows 2000 will be required.

Unfortunately, while we all declare that rain sucks, it keeps raining.

The machine works like this:
Man has idea.
Man takes idea to corporation.
Corporation buys man, thus buying idea.
Man becomes rich, corporation becomes richer.

Point being? As long as man needs riches, other man has shitty OS.

Anyhow, while I would be the first to say that WindowsXP blows goats, I unfortunately use it. Thus I would be a hypocrit to say anything.
But XP does blow.

However, it is not the spy-ware ridden piece of crap that people make it out to be.
Only the ignorant sods who don't know how to utilize proper security software will contract the shit.
And I'm talking about the AB-users as well. You know who you are, with your fifteen system tray icons all denoting various 'Anti-Virus' software, each sending out alarm bells against each other, etc...

If people could/would take the time to learn proper net-tiquette then I'm sure this whole web would be a lot nicer.
There's just too many assholes on this 'superhighway'.

Anyways, I'm buying this one. And I also like the fact that it comes with the four player deathmatch.
I was getting sick of 32 player, 16 player, 128 player, how many player? MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER!

WHO GIVES A FUCK!? Why do we need so many fucking people running around?
Look I got him! He had no clue I was there!
Well no shit, he was keep a bead on the fourty guys in FRONT of him, nevermind you and the armada in behind!

Time to weed out the true gamers!!!!!!

Funny how we will spend upwards of $400 to get a video card capable of playing this game but not an OS.

XP is superior in every way to 98. Sure it uses more resources because its better. 98 uses more resources than DOS... why.... because it is better.

Take $99 and buy a new OS. You are going to have to eventually, face it. Or you could get a MAC if you don't like the MS Monopoly. Now go close down your Microsoft Internet Explorer browser, type a letter with Microsoft Outlook and send it to someone who cares at ID. When your done, go buy the game for your Microsoft Xbox so you can play it.

It never ceases to amaze me when you people posts on these boards with no clue some times. Now, I'm not attacking anyone, I'm simply stating how it amazes me...the cluelessness of the people on this board.

Win98 cannot be supported...*Drum Roll*...because it is no longer supported by Microsoft. Look for this as a trend in nearly every game being released. Thief 3 was the first major title to do this. But wait...hold on...I'll use all caps for this, in hopes of somebody actually reading and getting a little education out of it.

THIEF 3 WAS NEVER SUPPORTED OUT OF THE BOX FOR WIN98...THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT WON'T RUN UNDER WIN98, BECAUSE IT WILL...AND IT RUNS BETTER UNDER WIN98 THAN XP, HMMM, IMAGINE THAT. I RAN THIEF 3 UNDER WIN98 AND NEVER HAD A HICCUP ONE, WITH BETTER FPS, AND NO GRAPHICAL OR SOUND ISSUES, WHILE OTHERS RAN WITH XP AS WELL WERE FINDING OUT HOW IT RAN...THEY ALSO BECAME CONVERTS.

SO, JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE SAYING IT WON'T RUN UNDER WIN98, I WOULDN'T HOLD MY BREATH ON THIS...SOMEBODY, JUST LIKE WHAT HAPPENED IN THE THIEF COMMUNITY, WILL FIND A WORKAROUND.

Also, for those of you dimwits who claim XP is the shiznit...you have no clue as to why a TRUE gamer would still be playing on Win98, or at least have a dual boot system with Win98 and XP. So, I'm going to edumacate you on this issue...XP won't allow you to run the classics, and Win98 is also your last OS connected to a DOS shell...sure, we now have emulators, but they run like crap.

For those interested...

Circuit City had the Windows XP Pro upgrade on sale this week. (not sure if it still) It was $169.99 - down from $199.99. If you are considering upgrading - check the weekly ads for local stores and go with the "professional" edition if possible.

I expect more and more games to start doing this. Simply because it will cut down on the "testing" phase a bit.

There's really no excuse to run Win98. It isn't any less resource intensive than Win2000 or XP. I've found both to be more reliable and run games just as well as 98 did. Like someone else said, if you have a machine capable of running Doom3, you should at least have Win2K on it. Whine all you want...it's your loss, not id's.

Rictor, how is XP more restrictive? I haven't run into any problems whatsoever as to what I can't do that I could in Win98.

For quite some time, I used only Windows 98 on all my computers. I didn't feel like paying for the upgrades, especially if I had to pay for each disk, in the Win XP model. Plus, I figured, there would be very little benefits.

But when I built my latest computer (a little less than a year ago) I finally upgraded to Windows 2000. And, man, was it good. It's sooo much more stable than 98, I get a little bit more eye candy, some more features and an easier setup. And it's not as bloated as Win XP. So don't be hesitant. Go snap up W2k. It's worth it.

Linux is another option. I have been using Debian as of late but I've kept a Windows partition with 2000 on it for all my games. Of course, with Doom III, you don't even need that Windows partition

Lose it? I didn't lose it. It's not like, "Whoops! Where'd my job go?" I QUIT.

You make the mistake of thinking that XP is somehow better than 98, in much the same way that a Radeon 9800 is better than a Radeon 7500. And that my friend, is a filthy, dirty lie.

As I said, for anyone other than a housewife who's sole concern is how to send email and "keep safe from the hackers", XP is just needless, unwanted crap. It takes up more resources, is more restrictive, and puts more control in Microsoft's hands.

But wait! Its the newest one! That means we HAVE to buy it, cause its the newest one, and if you don't buy a new OS every 3 years, you're obviously stupid and should not be meddling with technology.

I'm not going to install whatever piece of spyware-ridden junk Microsoft chooses to label as an OS and sell for $500. If I wanted to do that, I'de buy a Mac and install their "upgrade" every few months, and fork over a few hundred bucks.

Dude... Drop your six year old OS. Windows XP is way more reliable and compatable than shit98.

If you have a comp fast enough to run doom3, then you should be running at least Win2k and most likely WinXP.

I've seen a couple of games that came out recently that haven't supported Win9X, so it's only a growing trend. Catch up with the times if you want to play PC games.

I'll point out that it's not surprising at all and you'll still be able to play it with Linux (assuming you have a nVidia card of course).

Come on, win98 was never able to properly manage 512+ MB of RAM and it's the minimum required. What were you expecting?

Oh, and yes, there have been a lot of game recently not supporting win98/ME.

what...the....fuck!!!!!

I have Win98, and I have no intention of changine my OS, no matter how many new pieces of shit Microsoft comes out with. Its takes up more resources, is more restrictive, and gives MS a bigger monopoly.

When have you ever heard of a PC game unable to run on Windows 98?! It insane. It had to be intentionally programmed in that way, there's not other explaination.

This is fucking bullshit.
