this creative patent thing sucks.

its seems, from reading the gamedev.net thread in the beyond3d thread that...This non-Creative Dietrich chap gave a talk about it, and creative then went "oo we can take his words and patent it as our tech! whoopie!".

This seems to suggest : Creative. Oooh lovely people. yep. [someone powerup the deathstar, please]

The patent situation well and truly sucks.

We were prepared to use a two-pass algorithm that gave equivalent results at a speed hit, but we negotiated the deal with Creative so that we were able to use the zfail method without having to actually pay any cash. It was tempting to take a stand and say that our products were never going to use any advanced Creative/3dlabs products because of their position on patenting gaming software algorithms, but that would only have hurt the users.

personally, i wish he would have taken this as a reason to stick it to creative; somebody needs to break up the monopoly they have.

It will make a diffrence when you get the masssive video memory use doom 3 creates (pretty much all your video memory will be used), and you will need to get all that info from the card to the rest of the pc.

well..running 3dmark at agp4x vs 8x there was LESS than a 1% improvement...so agp 8x is basically useless as far as i can tell..anyone else have the same results? IMHO agp 8x is nothing more than marketing...maybe with Doom 3 though..that will change....could be interesting...and just waiting to run it on aquamark with the same tests...

I thought about this improvised center channel after I had to have my Z560 (RMA)replaced. My sub-Woofer died one month after the purchased. I called up Logitech and they told me to send them back the controller (volume thingy) and to cut-off the power cord on the sub-woofer and send 'em that too. I thought this was crazy since I was left with 4 extra speakers that worked fine...but anyway. I tried to use one of the speakers as a center channel but since it's un-powered by itself the sound was very low. I tried to add a booster thingy I bought at Radio shack, that helped a little but wasn't loud enough either. Finaly, I decided to buy a cheapo set of speakers that looked as good as the Logitechs and wouldn't look too much out of place. The ones I bought have a Triangle shape, so what I did, is use hot-glue to secure one of the extra Logitech speaker chrome stand I had from the extra ones on one of the side of the triangle-shaped speaker. It now sits nicely side-ways (lengthwise) on top of my monitor and looks every bit like any normal center channel. Once you adjust the volume on both (4.1 and 2.0)so that the center channel or the 4.1 don't overwhelm each-other you just need to use The windows main volume control to lower or raise the sound on all five speakers at the same time and they are always prefectly balanced. Nothing beats a little ingenuity when you don't have the cash, I guess. ;-)

For those of you who own the Philips HP1500, where did you get it from? I live in the States and it seems like it's not yet available here. Do I have to import it or anything?

I bought mine from Switzerland (I live in the US also)... Decent price ($275 or so, MSRP being $499), but expensive shipping. Worth the money, in my opinion. Though I think I would have been better off at this point just buying a Denon ADV-M71; not much more expensive than the HP1500 after shipping...

Thus far, I am really enjoying the series. I really enjoy the world, meeting up with these characters again, it looks great for a television series, and it is keeping the same sense of technological conspiracy. Just realize this is a series (going on its second year in Japan,) so it will have a slightly different pacing than the movie.

Liking the combination of action and character interaction,
Major Ray

Strange, my latest PCGamer talks about how Doom 3 has its own sound system completely reliant on the CPU. (and they said something like "much to the demise of Creative")

What's up with that?

Anyone know of a "wireless" 5.1 or better system that sounds good (for mainstream people, who would pay maybe 100-200 for what they consider "excellent" speakers)?

I want speakers behind me, but the wiring would be prohibitive.

I too bought the Logitech Z560 set a few years ago and I'm still happy enough not to exchange it for 5.1 (thanks for the tip on the improvised center channel however, Stinky). When the Z560 came out they were rated similarly to the competing Klipsch set in all the reviews and cost $100 less.

As for Creative: I stopped buying their products when they started charging for driver updates. I guess they don't do this anymore, but whatever. The Philips Acoustic Edge I picked up around that time still has all the features I need in a sound card anyway.

I have the Audigy 2 platinum (pre-ZS) I really like the Live Drive thingy because of the availability of the many front inputs for headphones and mic in games plus optical outs, midi, firewire port for my iPod etc. (I never cared for the remote control though and never even used it)
I also play Electric Guitar so I plug my guitar into my Zoom FX processor and the FX processor out into the front line-in of the Live Drive and have the sound come out of my Logitech Z560 and can directly record what I play on the computer that way with great guitar effects. The front drive is just very convenient for what I do, before I had the Audigy2 I used to have a NewQ Platinum for mic and headphone front inputs only, that worked for 2-channel strereo doubled to the rear speakers only and couldn't work right with audigy 2 you lose some functionality, FrontX is the same you lose 5.1 sound if you use it with Audigy2. Live drive is the most useful and convenient part of Audigy2 package for me at least.
Oh and btw, if you already have a 4.1 system and don't have the cash to buy a 5.1 yet for doom3... You can always do like I did. I bought a 2.0 labtec speaker set just to add a center channel to my current logitech 4.1. You plug it in the center channel plug in the back of Audigy2 card, now, only one of the the 2 speakers will work but that's fine since center channel is MONO anyway, you then set the speakers sound balance ONCE and then after that initial set-up just adjust the sound level of all 5 speakers via your keyboard volume knob or windows volume. The speaker that is not working from the 2.0 set is hidden under my desk out of the way, the center channel sits on top of my 21" monitor. This works great in DVDs for now until I'm ready and have the cash to get a proper 5.1 but this works in a pinch and I don't see any reason to change my great sounding Logitech 4.1 set yet just for DVDs and a few odd games. I mostly into music anyway.

id Software have announced that McDonalds(TM) are the official hamburger partners for Doom3. "You won't believe how scary this game is while eating a Happy Meal," said Ronald McDonald

What a McDonalds fanboi--everyone knows Carmack is in bed with Ronald. Anyway, the next version of the Burger King Kids Meal should provide just as scary an experience as a Happy Meal, while the Big Kids Meal should far surpass any experience a Happy Meal can offer.
