In watching The Bourne Identity on DVD last night, I was struck by an odd incident of typecasting. Like Leland Orser, who seems to get an inordinate number of roles playing a guy who is completely freaked-out by something, Brian Cox seems to have an odd specialty. I guess the idea of a covert operative with amnesia seeking answers is appealing enough to inspire multiple films, but I want to know what quality an actor could possess that would find him portraying the authority figure in command of all the mysterious facts in no fewer than three(!) of these movies. In addition to playing this unusual role in Bourne, Mr. Cox is also the man with the answers for the absent-minded heroes in both X2 and in The Long Kiss Goodnight. Weird, huh? He is also the only guy who knows the truth in The Ring, though there are no amnesiac spies in that one... guess he just has that "knowing" air.
