History of DOOM Video

Another G4/Tech TV feature on DOOM 3 is now online, offering a history of the DOOM franchise in the words of the folks at id Software. The clip can be found on the air on The DOOM Franchise, episode 310 of a series called "Icons." The piece offers clips from DOOM 3 and other games, interview footage, analysis and more, and for those without access to the program, three different online versions are now available, in different resolutions (and varying degrees of completeness). One or more of these clips can be found on 3D Gamers, Computer Games Online, Doom3.de, Doom3Maps.de, FilePlanet (registration required), Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, GameStar Online, and Tiscali Games.

hey what do you know

after the total ass raping of G4 TV by Tech TV, I though I would never see the show ICONS again. Well low and behold I turn it on last night and there it was: Icons: the story of Doom

I saw the show last night. It was pretty good. There was new footage I never saw before, specifically the very beginning of the game and confirmation the Cyberdemon is returning. Hopefully they re-air that GameGods show about John Carmack and Romero. There was a whole lot more info about the history of id software.

Uh... what? Is that really what you believe happened? That's like saying "Mike Tyson really got beat to hell by those women who pressed sexual assault charges."

I started downloading this, but then stopped, because I'm trying to stay away from spoilers now. I already know too much about the game

Went through it - no real spoilers. Unless you count seeing the old baddies reincarnated under the new engine as a spoiler - then stay away

Eh, I don't see the big deal. It's not like it's a movie or novel, where the slightest spoiler can, well, spoil the entire experience.

The game's gonna be a shooter; maybe more, but it's just my guess. The graphics will probably look cool. Beyond that, we're assuming the story will kind of be like the original; nothing complicated, and not original.

Even if you found out some cool things, or that any of the above statements are wrong, the game will still be as fun as it was before.

The only thing I foresee being a problem is if people start talking about:
1) monster bosses and how to kill them
2) where to find a secret stash of weapons
3) something like Romero's head on a pike being the final boss.

But even then, it should still be fun to play. You might just have 1 or 2 fewer surpises.

One new thing I noticed from the show is when they talk about ambient sounds. The part where you hear the woman crying about her baby, was just freaky. I can definatly assume this is gonna be a scary game.

They are not the first ones to do this, mind you. System Shock 2 did this very well.

Okay - when they are talking about "true 6-channel surround sound" - are they talking about a 5.1 system, or a 6.1 system ?

That's a 5.1 system. a 6.1 system, if it existed would be 7 channels.

Tech TV has the biggest group of asstarts I ever seen. They are as biassed as it comes, if it doesnt breathe Blizzard, Mac, or anything BUT Intel/Microsoft... its cool to them.

Yup, 6.1's been here for a while. The Audigy 2 cards were actually out before Creative launched the 6.1 and 7.1 speaker systems. Doesn the new Audigy 2 support 7.1?

If by 8 speakers you mean 6 satellites and a sub woofer, then that would be 7.1

The Audigy 2 ZS cards support 7.1

Having the ZS, but not having 7.1 :),

I got an Audigy 2 ZS hooked up the the ProMedia Ultras - I think they are plenty for my office. A 7.1 system would be appropriate for a home theater in a large room, for watching movies and such.

7.1 is overkill for gaming - no current game out there uses it, and I predict it will be a while before anyone does. But at least with Doom 3 and its sound engine, other developers will start taking soundFX more seriously.
