History of DOOM Video

Another G4/Tech TV feature on DOOM 3 is now online, offering a history of the DOOM franchise in the words of the folks at id Software. The clip can be found on the air on The DOOM Franchise, episode 310 of a series called "Icons." The piece offers clips from DOOM 3 and other games, interview footage, analysis and more, and for those without access to the program, three different online versions are now available, in different resolutions (and varying degrees of completeness). One or more of these clips can be found on 3D Gamers, Computer Games Online, Doom3.de, Doom3Maps.de, FilePlanet (registration required), Gameguru Mania, Gamer's Hell, GameStar Online, and Tiscali Games.

Cool videos you got there.

Thanks...I have to admit, those actually ARE my videos (I did them), and yes, I used JDoom for them. Shameless plug.

Once again, there are NO spoliers in the game, except for the new versions of the old enemies. True, they do show some of the in-game footage of what looks like the first 5 or 10 minutes of the game, but other then that, there really are no spoilers.

Well, until someone mentioned it (I didn't watch the vid), I didn't know there was gonna be a return of the CD boss in Doom3. It kinda diminishes the "oh shit!" factor when I would have come across it in the game, not expecting to find it in the game (anyone who remembers the first time they played the original Doom knows what I'm talking about) .

Don't worry, I'm not going to say any spoilers here :-)

WRT spoilers, I'm not too concerned with knowing that some creatures are going to make a return. It's a retelling of the original DooM, after all. What I'm worried about, and what I think other people who say they are concerned about seeing spoilers are speaking of, are rather how it looks. I don't want to see a trailer that will show the new textures, lighting, bump mapping, and other effects, because then I'll expect too much from the game. Better to not have high expectations and be blown away when one first plays it in the pitch black silence of the computer room with surround sound.

Did G4TTV get it wrong and have the old Imp morphing into a new Arch-Vile?

Yes- it's like a new game! The some of the characters themselves though are still "pixelated" but the rest is awesome.

Still playing Doom II and the best servers are usually through zDaemon...CTF being the best and most intense

(OpenGL just makes Doom look alot worse than it already does IMO)

Doomsday isn't too hot for online play. I always had problems with it in the past. Besides, ZDoom has the best multiplayer support. I haven't used it in a few years, but back then it was quick, easy, and plenty of people played it. If I'm not mistaken ZDoom was supported by Gamespy Arcade (a bit of software I will never install again).

Cool videos you got there. Reminds me of the days when I played Doom 1/2 religiously. Still play it now, as a matter of fact. The guy who made those videos was obviously using one of the awesome source ports. Notice colored lighting, mouse look, lense flare from the plasms rifle, etc.

To really juice up Doom check out Doomsday (jDoom) over here: http://www.doomsdayhq.com/news.php
Everybody should get the latest release then check the forums for links to the jDRP (Resource Pack, 3d models, new particles, etc.), JDTP(High Res Texture Pack), jDUI (User Interface updates, better HUD), jDEP (Environmental Pack, fog, lighting, etc.), and to polish it off grab the jdoom-textures addon for enhanced details and fogdoomlights to add much cooler lighting with the high res textures.

I remember back in the day when I was working at EA and we used to have DOOM 2 deathmatches on the company LAN. Soooo much fun.

Of course there are lots of spoilers. DUMB! You see all kinds of things that give you clues to other things.

It's no different than watching a documentary on the making of a film before it's released.

Good point. We should have spoiler alerts for anything that might give away details of the game

Oh yeah, the part where they talk about the new sound engine, *possible spoiler* and show the woman talking to get their point across, really did creep me out the first time I heard it , and brought back some fond memories from System Shock 2
