Vrenna Scores DOOM 3

The official announcement about the DOOM 3 soundtrack got snarled in some sort of mail funkiness, this should have been posted yesterday:
(Los Angeles, California, July 21st, 2004) - id Software™, one of the world's leading video game developers, today announced that noted producer-composers Chris Vrenna and Clint Walsh have produced the theme song to the highly anticipated DOOM 3™, set for release August 3rd , 2004.

A terrifying battle with the forces of Hell, DOOM 3's dramatic storyline, incredible action, mind-blowing graphics, 5.1 surround sound and ground-breaking technology are fused together to draw gamers into the most frightening, shocking, and gripping first-person gaming experience ever created.

Renowned as one of the founding members of Nine Inch Nails, Chris Vrenna is recognized as one of the top producer-remixers in the music industry, having worked with a 'who's who' of artists such as U2 for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, P.O.D. for The Scorpion King as well as Weezer, David Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins and Rob Zombie amongst many others. Vrenna recently released his second Tweaker album (created with collaborator Clint Walsh) titled 2 a.m. wakeup call on the Waxploitation label.

"I have been a fan of almost every game id has developed", said Vrenna.
"I grew up on DOOM, QUAKE and Wolfenstein, so this was a huge honor for me to have been asked. Clint and I have created something worthy of the task, that both game and music fans will be into."

Vrenna has produced and composed music for a number of video games including American McGee's Alice, id Software's QUAKE (as a member of NIN), The Sims II, Enter The Matrix, as well as upcoming games such as Tabula Rasa and Area 51.

"We asked Chris to create a modern DOOM 3 theme song that reflected the character and intensity of DOOM3, and we couldn't be happier with the final product," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "Chris and id have shared a mutual appreciation for each others work, and it was exciting to be able to team up on something that fans of both id and Vrenna will appreciate."

I think that if Powerman 5000 went back to their old, heavy, dark, Tonight the Stars Revolt-style music, it would make a kickass Doom 3 score. I mean if Powerman 5000 never changed its style to a wussy style.... I probably shouldn't live in the past...

I have no idea which one you are referring to, so I will answer both.

LFN = It's ok, more like the bastard, red-haired stepchild of something like Alias. About ten years older, too.

GitS = The first DVD of the television show comes out Tuesday and that will be my first time seeing it. From what I hear, it is a partial continuation of the movie (a few years down the road) while mixing some things up (the robot tanks make a reappearance.) It did well enough to have a second season in Japan and I am really interested in seeing how Innocence fares (a much more direct sequel of the ideas from the original.)

Having cleared out seven games today,
Ray

I always hated 'adaptive' scores which change when stuff happens.

Maybe its just been done wrong, but when the 'oh noes, theres a monster just spawned in nearby' music cuts in for the 100th time its irritating.

Well of course I know how to work at it though I don't mention that part since I apparently have a lot of immature friends online and they don't see the goods in it so I leave that part out. Of course that will be my only benefit, what else will I get? Store discount? LoL!

Yeah same here post below me. I think horror games are equally effective without music. Sure music can add suspense as it did in the Resident Evil series although it made you suspect more often. Heck even when there was no music you knew something was coming since it's alittle too quiet. Keeping the game quiet throughout keeps you unaware. I like that more since your listening to the quietest sound in the enviroment. ----In other news, I just got a job at a girl's clothing store just to get money for Doom 3, do I get the most desperate award? Yeah sad I know, let's hope stockboy can stay in the backroom far from any eyes. Cheers!

Music In The Game?

1) Go to store, buy Video Game.
2) Take home and install
3) Turn music off, set graphics settings
4) Play game.

I hate music in the game. Especially when playing intense online games.

Doom 3 needs a soundtrack by The Talking Heads. Imagine blasting Imps to Psycho Killer or Once in a Lifetime!

Or how about the Pixies? I could tear some shit up with Debaser going. Actually, that's a really good idea. Dammit.

Why does "a modern DOOM 3 theme song" have to mean generic rock crap. Doom 3 needs a theme song that is more epic with timeless quality.

It's offical! Chris Vrenna is a rip off artist! Don't believe me? Listen:

http://www.dissention.net/media/music/toolRip.mp3

actually - when presented like that, it's easier to differentiate the two songs. For example, the first comparison...in the Tool song the bass is open notes and bent to give a distorted sound to it. In the Tweaker song, the bass is more standard and follows the music. The guitars in the Tool song are shorter riffs repeating - where the Tweaker guitars go into more of a melody before repeating. The 2nd example in the mp3 is useless because the Tweaker potion is about 1 second worth of music.

There's no denying it that it sounds like Tool, but to say he's ripping them off is inaccurate IMO. Either way, I could care less since I'm indifferent about both bands.

Btw - regarding the mp3....someone has a little TOO much time on their hands.

i've been waiting for someone to really take it to that next level - with a score that changes dynamically depending on how you play, what events transpire, what room you are in, etc. etc.

i know that so called 'adaptive' music for games has been out for a while - but its never really been properly executed that I can remember
Yeah agreed, although I'm sure Black and White 2 will attempt it, a properly scored game would be a welcome innovation.
