Half-Life 2 Bug Watch

A post to the HL2 World Forums reproduced on their front page offers an email reply reportedly from Gabe Newell with the status of Half-Life 2 (thanks Marcoux and Voodoo Extreme), offering some crunch time math:
Right now we are looking at our bug numbers. Each day you fix some bugs and you find some new bugs. The net number tells you how quickly you will get to zero.

At our current rate of find/fix bugs, we'll be down to zero bugs in 16 days.

With Doom 3 gold and HL 2's goldness apparently imminent, I don't think I'm gonna have enough time to keep playing Eve Online (my current addiction).

Oh well

Do you think the bugs are done in 16 days because they plan on buying Doom 3 and playing it?

I still think that EMAIL is a hint to when the game will go GOLD-- 16 days from now is the day DOOM 3 is SHIPPING- What a better way to steal thunder from Doom 3 then to make a - HALF-LIFE 2 goes gold announcement? Still it will take about 3 weeks from that announcemnt- so im betting on a LATE august- First week of september- I will be playing half-life 2.. hmm scary.. Nvidia is going to get a huge boost with the recent DOOM3 and Nvidia cards = killer framerates - ATI will benefit greatly if Half-LIfe 2 is indeed bug free in 16 days

sounds like the Valve team is trying to steal a little thunder from Doom 3. Why can't we all just get along? We're all gonna buy both games anyway. Shaddap already.

fanboys will download the "other" game illegaly so they can't show how badass they are + save some $$$
You have to be pretty lame though, if you can love HL2 but not Doom3 (or vice versa)

Yup, no point in bitching about Cards and Games and Gabe eating babies. Just shut up and play until your eyes catch fire.

BTW Doom3 will blow HL2 out of the water on graphics alone.

Valve is a bunch of fucking liars. How many times have they lied to gamers, just to keep up their interest in their shoddy game?

Gabe, is he that fat bastard guy in Austin Powers?

In all fairness, he's not talking about shipping a "bugfree game". Let me tell you something about how development works: Testers and developers alike enter bug reports into a bug tracking software. A bug report includes detailed information on the problem, such as steps to reproduce it. On the basis of that report, the developers are trying to come up with a solution. If it works, the bug is "closed" in the tracking software, albeit saved for future reference.

That process is what he's talking about.

I have NEVER seen a bug free retail PC game. Some games are in better shape than others when released, but they are all essentialy beta software. (some are released in pre-alpha stage, think SOLDNER hehe)

Anyone who has the foresight to guarantee the logic of millions of lines of code is either a god or a republican

Chances are that the bugs they are refering to are only High Priority bugs. More often than not the lower priority bugs ship with the title and are never resolved.

Either way you l33t g33ks try to describe it to anyone. Gabe did say DOWN TO ZERO BUGS in 16 days.

Take it as you will and dont sugar coat it with developing logics. Everyone knows how critical the internet is, thus he opened a can of pork fat by saying such a thing.

Remember, your average gamer isnt a developing Don-Jaun. And Gabe knows this. Thus he is putting his foot in his mouth.

As I tried to explain in above post, he's referring to the bugs they are aware of - which are tracked in a database.

Obviously, with such a large codebase, more bugs linger that are impossible to detect and/or reproduce in a reasonable amount of time.

Come on, guys: I don't think of Newell very highly (anymore), either. But it seems obvious to me that he took the concept of development methodology and bug tracking for granted when he wrote that statement. So he's not at all promising a bug-free game here.

Just one without any bugs they're aware of. If that resembles the truth, none of us know.

> Either way you l33t g33ks try to describe it to anyone. Gabe did say DOWN TO ZERO BUGS in 16 days.

He also said "Each day you fix some bugs and you find some new bugs." The implication is you can only fix bugs you're aware of. What he says is "if we keep finding and fixing bugs at the current rate, according to our bug tracking statistics, we'll hit zero in 16 days". He does not claim "there will be no bugs left whatsoever".
