Half-Life 2 Bug Watch

A post to the HL2 World Forums reproduced on their front page offers an email reply reportedly from Gabe Newell with the status of Half-Life 2 (thanks Marcoux and Voodoo Extreme), offering some crunch time math:
Right now we are looking at our bug numbers. Each day you fix some bugs and you find some new bugs. The net number tells you how quickly you will get to zero.

At our current rate of find/fix bugs, we'll be down to zero bugs in 16 days.

Let's be fair I'm sure he is referring to the bugs that they have found. Not to say there are no more bugs just 16 that they know about.

Excuse me Mr Newwell, but wasn't Halflife 2 using the havok physics engine? should the coders have nothing to do with it?

Puting HL aside for the moment and just addressing that statement on its own...

I know it was meant (somewhat) in jest, but for the record a giant piece of 3rd party software like a physics engine doesn't just attach itself to your own code like a magic Lego. Nice as it would be, the truth is it can be a real time consuming pain in the ass to make the two meet in a useful way. Sound engines, video players -- those are easy. But physics is a lot more pervasive since it needs to get involved in so many aspects of your engine in order to do its thing. So yeah, the programmers have a lot to do with it.

Getting back to HL... Valve should really just shut up until it's done. No one's going to "forget" about HL2 if there isn't any press on it for a couple/few weeks. So either they're not as close as they say they are or they just don't know when to put a cork in it.

Sho,

Nice excuse.

Put that crap down and walk away man. Your left-wing BS is getting thick.

With Doom 3 gold and HL 2's goldness apparently imminent, I don't think I'm gonna have enough time to keep playing Eve Online (my current addiction).

Lol... I haven't left my station in over 6 months. I log in to start training a new skill then log back out. The section of lowsec space I'm in has changed hands more times then I can count. Every time I open Local and Station I don't have any of the pictures cached

Silly Gabe, "zero bugs" is never reached.

Well, at least it'll be entertaining when the bug reports from the community start pouring in.

HL2, the first zero bug piece of software in history!

I remember a while back when the copy protection scheme for HL2 was announced to be an online verification via Steam.

Is this still the case?

Steam = evil

No $upport = make it go away

Granted, if you banned every company that did stupid shit, you'ld have succumbed to the elements or starvation some time ago so you DO have to pick your battles

In about 14 days, Valve will announce that some hackers have stolen their bug list, thus setting the title back another 8-10 months. And that's just to recreate the bug list.

Jesus-on a pogo stick-christ! I can stand the political wanderings, the conspiracy theories and even the recent debates on the nazi-occult connection but I can not and will not stand for off topic discussions on racism.

It took 31 posts to hit Godwin's Law. You people are getting soft.

With zero bugs, much like a console, I won't need to patch it or wait for Steam updates that fail.

If Gabe wants to get rid of bugs, just stop carrying around those damn pheremones.

badamp ba!

anyway, can't stand this slow drip of HL2 stories. Can't decide who's dumber, the gaming media for calling Valve every 5 minutes for an interview, or Gabe for granting it.

I mean, what could they possibly have left to ask--, Hi, are you uh, still working on the game? You are? cool just checking, is it still called Half Life2? Ok great and uh, hey it's still a FPS right? It's still got guns and stuff...?

sheesh

Personally, I found the comment pretty humorous. It's got good sarcasm and a very sick fat joke. I'm laughing. I wonder if Gabe sweats a glass of water walking up a flight of stairs.

Ok I understand what you are saying. I should have worded it differently, now that I read what you just said.

Lemme reword it, it appears now that where I live is the least racist place in the world now after seeing the open hatred in other places, though it may just be more covert than what it once was.

And as the old saying goes "what people dont know, dont hurt them"!

The only difference is the hate crimes in this country have dropped dramatically, where in the others they worsen.

I am just stating fact that racism LIES WITHIN EVERY RACE. Or should I say Bigotry rather.

That doesn't match your claim that you live in the least racist country in the world. I'm not looking to flame anyone but you'd do yourself a favour if you stated opinions as opinions and facts after checking them. Hate crimes may have dropped but racism may just be less overt. If you legislate against something the perpetrators just get sneakier. But what's your point? Is racism getting better or is it pandemic and within us all? Confused I am.

There's an old quote by I can't remember who: "nations are exclusive clubs for hating foreigners". Nothing's changed there.

Just for the record: I never claimed that, and I wasn't specifically talking or thinking about US history in my post.

Please, let's behave like adults and not turn this into a "my country is less racist than yours!" contest. I'm sure we can all agree on racism being a global issue, and one that is best dealt with by taking it on together, rather than pointing fingers.

That said, the whole discussion is very much off-topic, and this thread is surely going to turn out that much more productive and worthwhile when we stick to talking about the news post.

Yeah, and the Nazis Slaughtered Jews, the Islamic Muslims hate the Christians, the South Africans hate the blacks there, Chinese hate everybody, French hate Americans, the list goes on and on.

The only difference is the hate crimes in this country have dropped dramatically, where in the others they worsen. And for your information I am not white!

I never once said anyone fucked me over or complained about that... I am just stating fact that racism LIES WITHIN EVERY RACE. Or should I say Bigotry rather.

To argue that and say only racism lies within the whites is well .. ignorant!
