Reznor on DOOM 3

A Q&A on nine inch nails access (thanks Not One Of Us) offers Trent Reznor's take on why he did not end up working on the DOOM 3 soundtrack as planned. Here's the deal on what happened, and Trent's guess about who ended up doing the theme song:
john carmack and i had established a friendship while working on quake. he came to see up playing during the last tour and wanted to get my feelings on a remake of doom with a new advanced engine he was working on. we discussed how cool it would be to create a place that was immersive to the point it wouldn't need a "soundtrack" -- the technology was advanced enough to visually and aurally to create a rich environment you could truly explore and inhabit. we discussed my involvement as the overall sound producer -- from foley and voice over to ambient world noise.

later, i started work on what would be used at the e3 show 2 years ago. it was exciting working in a totally new way with new tools. i was working directly in the game editor and with the programmers refining the sound code and helping the environment come alive. tried "tuning" various environmental sound sources so they'd cohesively interact with on another in a "musical" way. the advanced technology provided enough horsepower to give me a seemingly limitless amount of freedom. it was a lot of work, a lot of thinking in a different way, and a lot of fun. i was working with the best guys in the field -- true geniuses.

out idea was to have no music, apart from a main theme i'd write for the intro. no rock, nothing current sounding, nothing to date the game.

well... eventually time and money and bad management came into play and it didn't work out. disappointing on a number of levels for me, but that's the way it went.

I have seen the engine at work and it is great. i'm looking forward to seeing what they've done with the game.

and i guess tool did the theme song

It's true though, the little asian man trained by running a few miles each day and right after the run he would consume some large quantity of water, thus stretching his tired abdomen. As a result, he could pack a garbage truck into his belly and nobody would be the wiser.

So I go away for the weekend and this topic turns from doom3 stuff and hardware talk to fat white people and little Asians that can eat a lot of hot dogs... Wow we are running out of stuff to talk about.

All I got to say is that I just watched the g4techtv special on doom and it rocked. Granted I d/l'd it and it looked like crap it still amazed me with the graphics. Still hoping that ID will surprise us and release the demo early!

GameSpy: Has the DOOM 3 demo been completed yet?

Tim Willits: We're working on it, and as soon as we figure out the best time to release it, we'll release it.

In interviews, Roth always said he made the lyrics fun, which is probably why you think Hagar's lyrics are sappy. Different attitudes.

MK was all about graphics, glitz and amusement. The SF series was about gameplay, adrenaline, and fighting. This is supported by the fact that all the MK never made it big in Japan. For those that disagree, go to any arcade in Japan, like I did for two years straight, and just see how far your stupid juggling, friendship, combos get. Speed and reflexes are the true sport of fighting games. SF gets it done right. Americans are famous in Japan because they are fat, and eat so much, yet a Japanese guy can eat more hot dogs. What's up with that?

I have no rational explanation for it, but I simply cannot get enough Dig Dug. I played it quite a bit as a kid and love it to this day.

This is the game I pumped the most quarters into:

I'll always wonder how VH would have sounded if Roth would have stayed because I have a feeling it still wouldn't have sounded like "classic" VH.

No doubt. What bothers me most about the Sammy era is the poor lyrics. His always seem so sappy to me.

That little hand thing he does is kind of strange as well.

I hear that Eddie's son has been playing at some of the shows. I'd like to see what kind of chops he has.

I was really thinking about going until I saw the ticket prices. $90 a ticket!!!

I was lucky enough to see them 3 times with Roth and 3 times with Hagar.

If Roth had toured this summer I was planning on going no matter what the cost.

Sammy? meh.

This gives me an idea for a cool D3 (or HL2, FC, U2k4, whatever) mod...FATALITY MOVES!

We love it when the game acknowledges a great accomplishment (headshot, rampage, etc.) so why not a system where, after you have killed someone and their corpse is lying dead, you do something on the keyboard, and then, WHAM! you stick your fist into their chest and rip out their heart!!!! Or spine, intestines...whatever. Maybe go into 3rd person too.

It could turn into a gameplay mechanic, you're vulnerable to other attackers, but you get bonus health or something for doing it (and a )

As for Street Figher II, which of the fifty million versions was this? Super Hyber Turbo Tiger White Nifty Ultra edition??? Joking aside, I played that game like mad...until my heart stopped that first time I saw Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat II just took that perfect cake and put a cherry on top.

Noting MKII was the last arcade game that I seriously played,

The thing is, Eddie wanted to write the type of songs he wrote with Sammy no matter what and he especially wanted to start using more keyboards. He felt that Roth's lack of vocal range was holding his songwriting back. I'll always wonder how VH would have sounded if Roth would have stayed because I have a feeling it still wouldn't have sounded like "classic" VH.

One break comming up!!!! Chained!!

Want to hear something sad?

So for some incredibly pathetic, misty eyed, nostalgic reason I picked up their Best of Both Worlds double album.

All I do is skip right the hell over the Sammy songs.

On their own I can listen to them. They're ok. When I know that a real VH song is just one 'click' away I can't resist.

They should have offered this album in two versions. It would be interesting to see the sales of each then.

Godsmack would be kinda cool for the D3 music. But they aren't CREEPY enough.

I still like the Quake 1 NIN soundtrack. It is creepy and disturbing, just like Doom 3 should be.
