DOOM 3 Requirements

Gamers, check under hood because Doom 3 is coming on the Houston Chronicle discusses system requirements for playing DOOM 3. In spite of Todd Hollenshead previously deferring to the expertise of the programmers for hardware info (story), these minimum requirements are apparently courtesy of id's CEO:
• A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
• 384 megabytes of memory.
• Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
• An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.

About our "prayed-for sequels", I think the game industry is becoming a lot like the movie industry, consolidating, requiring big capital investment, using tried-and-true formulas making bad sequels to bad games just because its safer.

HOWEVER,

It is also getting like the movie industry in that the people, not the people with money yet, but the rest, have a clear and defined set of absolute classic properties that, money or not, WILL AT SOME POINT BE MADE. It may be a good thing or a bad thing, but the huge investment costs will stop independents from making immeadiate sequels to "cult-classics", but games that become recognized as truly great (like System Shock I & II) will have a major studio make a run at it.

One day (maybe 2015ish) we will be at the Hollywood level, which isn't exactly quality friendly, but has a lot of talented and dedicated people who get a shot or two at making our SSIII (or FS3, Gabriel Knight 4, etc.) dreams come true. Remember LOTR worked out very well under this kind of system (miraculously)

Hey Cpt Piloter, I notice you have a Audigy 2 with a hometheater surround setup.. I have an Audigy 2 Plat hooked up to my sony reciever with 5.1 surround inputs using 3 analog out cables from the card, but I never can get the subwoofer to kick during any game.. Are you using a stero subwoofer or one of those subwoofers from a computer surround kit?

Just curious.

As great as the System Shock games were, I think the series should be put to rest. I mean, it seems we're in that little era where older games are being remade with older technology. It's great and all, but coming up with newer and (frankly) fresher franchises would go farther to renewing the PC gaming industry.

Hmm...

"Deus Ex: IW" was a real letdown after the original.

But "Thief 3" was very good (though I hated the engine). In my opinion, it was a good representation of the original 2 Thief games and their gameplay.

I'd only like a "System Shock 3" game if they could do it as well as the 2nd one. Unfortunately, lately it looks like it's either hit-or-miss when it comes to reviving old games.

Although, the current greats of DooM 3 and Wolf 3d being remade are pretty damn cool.

I am really wondering how the new Vampire game will turn out. The early shots did not give me great hope, but I have seen two previews so far that have likened it to the gameplay of System Shock...

Yeah System Shock and System Shock 2 both scared the utter Beejesus out of me. I remember that quite clearly.

I think both Ultima Underworld 3 and System Shock 3 could both be done very well using the Doom 3 engine.

Not that it will ever happen

With the release of the latest video, Doom 3 looks more and more like System Shock, with a lot of action thrown in.

Hoping the folks at Irrational somehow manage to get all interested parties approval to make System Shock 3 with the Doom 3 engine - now that is a possibility that will get me into a hype frenzy

Well in the requirements that have been posted, there hasn't been anything about a 32bit minimum.

I just hope with all the eye candy this new engine is capable of, ID did not lose sight of the importance of gameplay.

what gives of the min cpu spec?

Er, maybe it indicates that 3DMark03 is not the be all and end all of system performance?

D3 is going to be CPU intensive. And GPU intensive. At the same time. You can't hand physics and AI off to the GPU to calculate. I'm not sure that you could hand off per-poly hit detection either.

even with an AeroCool cpu cooler, it still runs at 120 degrees

If that's in Fahrenheit then you don't have an issue at all.

If that's in Celsius, keep a fire extinguisher handy -- you're way over the chip's maximum thermal load.

And no, it's not hurting performance.

Agreed if you look at any serious quake 3 configs you'll see that you max the fps at 125 and with all the graphics changes they also recommend you can prolly get 100% max frames with a p3 450 and a tnt2.
