More on Freespace 3

A lengthy post on the Adrenaline Vault Forums by 3000 AD's Derek Smart goes further into the discussion about the possibility that 3000 AD would acquire the Freespace license from Interplay (story). He discusses the economics of creating such a game while addressing some of the vocal reactions to the idea.

hmmm maybe the effects didn`t make it into the demo then. Funny I can`t remember them. FS 1 tho I don`t think I will ever forget.

Well, i never played the demo, but I checked the FS2 launcher and, yep, it's defo there.

It's possible the feedback code was disabled in the demo to work out some problems, or maybe even simply because they had yet to add the new effects (engine wash being one, I think).

Derek Smart is not just delusional, he has a serious mental instability. I'm not even joking. He obviously suffers from some form of egomaniac/megalomania. Look at his behavior, that's all the proof you need. He proposes an idea that 90% of gamers instantly hates, due to the fact that everyone knows he has no talent from his horrible, buggy, piece of crap Battlecruiser games, yet refuses to accept the negative critism that everyone dumps on him, then FLAMES those very same people with insulting rants and threats of legal action. ANY negative response to his ideas is responded with vieled insults.

The man is fucking nuts, and he MUST NOT be allowed to work with the Freespace license.

I know for a fact that lots of members of my fellow members of the game industry read Bluesnews, so I'm formally PLEADING with anyone out there, Microsoft, Vivendi, Ubi-Soft, ANYONE that has the revenue : Buy the Freespace license from Interplay before that idiot Smart can get his filthy hand on it, PLEASE. Save the franchise before Smart can bury it in the sands of failure.

PLEASE.

Tango: yeah, well, that's exactly what I meant!
Only John Romero could maybe have the right to say the things DS keeps spouting all day long... but Derek Smart? He's nuts I tell you, and I mean nuts as in delusional.

I've been replaying Doom I and II and you know what? Romero deserves anyone's admiration regardless of what stupid things he did or said in the past.

There were some design issues with echelon. Not to mention bugs... But if you looked past those 2 things it was an alright game. The graphics at the time were really nice...

I read with interest this thread on Freespace 3. Very colorful replies in here. lol As well read Derek Smarts post at the link. I was surprised at his tone considering he is an indie dev. Alot of his attitude is one I would expect to see from a much bigger dev. Aaah well.

About a possible Freespace 3. I loved FS 1. I had just picked up my M$ sidewinder FF stick when that game came out. Whoah, talk about an immersive experience. When FS 2 arrived in demo form, it didn`t feel to me at all as good as FS 1 did. Infact, it wasn`t even close. I think they dropped FF support as well.

Since then, I have only like 1 sci fi flight based game series. and that is Echelon from Madia. It is sci fi, flightbased, but flight is planet surface focussed. This gives a real sense of speed and feeling of flight.

Spacebased flight just cannot compete. There is just no sense of speed. Freespace 1 had the force feedback effect on the stick of when you slowed down or sped up, the sense of movement was reflected in the ff stick effects. Or how it felt when you took a hit from enemy fire, even accidently running into an object, or getting rammed. You FELT this stuff. It gave you the feeling of actual weight in the game world. The force effects definately helped with the sense of speed etc to help attach the player psychologically to that world.
I don`t remember FS 2s demo supporting force feedback, and ultimately it didn`t have the same effect on me as Freespace 1 did. Since then, I have tried just about every demo of every spacebased flight game to come out. And all I found lacking in its sense of making me feel I was actually speeding along out in the void. Which is why Echelon had such an amazing effect on me. That is not to say others won`t dig a Freespace 3 with its spacebased combat. But at this point, I just can`t see a spacebased flight combat game succeeding.
Ya check out the StarWars flight game coming vids? The ships look great. The actual battling out in space with them looks like a snorefest. lol

[qlue needs to stop giving this guy attention. The PC game industry is full of small independent developers who sure as hell deserve and could use the promotion and support of this website a lot more than Derek Smart.[q]

Blue's just giving us what we want. THere were 219 posts to the first thread and god only knows how many lurkers. Who knows how many there will be on this thread before it's done.

Each click serves an ad - which is good for Blue. If you don't want to read about Dr. Smart, stop clicking.Maybe Blue should throw a little cash Derek's way to make an appearence.

Jebus, who the hell does this guy think he is? Pre-IonStorm John Romero?
No, for several reasons.
a)Romero had form - Doom, DII, Quake etc showed he knew what he was doing in design terms - he made some of the best levels ever. Smart has never designed a game that has been well recieved by 'critics'.
b) Had Romero delivered his promises on time, Daikatana would have been great, given what was available then. The problem was, it arrived three years after they said it would.
c) Romero didn't insult buy quality licences, insult the fans, fuck the game up.

At least Romero had style

can't believe I'm defending Romero, but hey, it is against DS

Sc4r4b, you'd probably agree with me that just because you haven't actually played Freespace 2 means you're actually better off than the majority posting here, right? They have a bunch of stupid opinions about OLD games. We should champion these new opinions about NEW games we have No FuCkinG clUE about. That would rock. Will you join me in raising a hearty cheer to the universe that "WE ROCK LIKE DUMB FUCK MORONS EVERYWHERE ELSE!"? I hope you Do.

Huh? Are you high? I have played FS2... I simply haven't completed it... IIRC, it has been a few years, I was pretty close to beating FS2 but I put it down because I got bored with it... Maybe you misunderstood what I meant? I, like others here, have never tried a DSmart game... To me UC sounds like a cool concept.

I was just thinking the exact same thing. This first post was news, this is just insanity. Can we focus out attention on a little game called Doom 3...it did just go gold for crying out loud.

If I may... " You can sit there and bleat about how great it is to have your small dedicated team and at most a few hundred thousand bucks to work with"

I have a pissant little business going on, over three depots and my HOUSEHOLD budget is more than " a few hundred thousand bucks " Granted, I have to run 2 households because my whore of a wife has a good lawyer but all the same...nice work...

OMFG, that's the funniest thing I've read on the internet in a long time...

God bless, I hope you don't learn what it's like to feel the pain of having the woman you love stab you in the back. By which, I obviously mean, I do. Just because DS comes across as a dick doesn't mean he is. He may have reasons for acting like a dick. I don't mean he's actualy acting like an actor in a sopa opera, like Eastenders. I mean acting as in ohhhhh, I just realised I'm acting, when he comes round in therapy. Consider that you heartless crunt.

Hehe, it's amazing how much more enjoyable blues is when there's a derek thread. You gotta admit that. I'll salute him for at least fueling this kinda fire in people.

As a fan of Freespace though, I hope he never gets near it. I wonder how much the licenese would cost though, gotta be cheap for him to even think of buying it.
