Derek Smart and Freespace 3?

A speculative question from 3000 AD's Derek Smart on the Adrenaline Vault Forums (thanks Rake) polls interest in him acquiring the rights to Freespace 3, making the following statements in a pair of posts:
....Derek Smart, yeah, that would be me, got the license from my friends at Interplay (a publisher I had very good experiences with); would you buy Freespace 3 if I made it?

Discuss. Rave. Rant. Argue. But this is something I am seriously considering, given that it looks like Interplay has started off loading properties (starting with Fallout3). I mean, just think. Would you rather see this legacy license fall into the wrong hands?
...
I have already contacted my Interplay contact about it btw.

Driver 3? Jul 15, 2004, 22:47

Has anyone played the PS2 game "Driver 3"? I wonder if Derek Smart had anything to do with it because I have never played a more crappy and buggy PS2 game, ever.

It's really sad when you have a game with so much potential (Driver 3, Universal Combat, etc) but fall so short of playable. It is like a quarterback getting the football, having a clear run to the goal line, but tripping over a cheerleader after only 5 yards.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled program, "The Derek Smart bashing hour."

PS: Derek, if you where not such an arrogant prick and actually tried to make good games, people probably wouldn't bash you so much. But then again....

Yea but you have to go thru several menus first with obscure
Multiple key strokes and it still wouldn’t work
And of course none of this would be mentioned in the 200 page PDF
Manual you hade to download after you figured out there wasn’t

The ones he says he'll "lay out" the mod makers with on IP claims for bad mouthing him. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA WHEEEEEE!

Derek Smart's Problem Jul 15, 2004, 22:36
Jul 15, 2004, 22:36

For those wondering (such as #14), the problem with Derek Smart (ok, just one of many problems with Derek Smart), is that he keeps adding content to his games without making sure any of it is quality.

Case in point: Universal Combat. The game aimed to simulate ground combat, space combat, sea combat, air combat, and probably some forms of combat not yet conceived. In theory, this could be awesome -- a game where you could be a grunt in a halo-style situation, a space combat pilot like freespace, fighter pilot like any of a number of flight sims, and so on. Yet, all the sections were pretty bad, most likely because he tries to include so much stuff that he apparenty has neither the time nor resources to do a good job with any of it.

We already saw him state plans to do this with Freespace. He's ready to model the interior of all the ships, add ground combat, and undoubtedly add plenty more unneeded junk that will take his focus away from making a decent space combat game. I'd also like to mention Universal Combat is supposed to have a learning curve of over 20 hours. Compare this to how long it took you to learn the last space combat game you played.

If this doesn't bother you, let's again look at Universal Combat. Say you want to focus on ground combat (fps style gameplay). First, you have to pick which one of twelve races you want to play as. Next, you have to decide which class you want to play as. Being a Derek Smart game, there can't just be a 'space marine' type, there has to be seven different types of marines. Would you like to be a mobile infantry marine, elite force marine, assault force marine, recon force marine, engineering corps marine, medical corps marine, or space force marine? You're still not done yet. Now you get to pick which base on which planet you'd like to be stationed at. Then you pick which assets your character has access to. Then you select your gear. Finally you get to select a scenario you'd like to play (if applicable). He's already thrown in far more options than Half-Life, Halo, Doom or any fps I can think of has had, and this is only a small fraction of the whole game.

In short, Derek's the kinda guy who would have added an option to select the type of battery you wanted to use in your flashlight in Doom 3 or Half-life.

I don't know weather he can pull it off or not, making a good Freespace title, to be honest I never play Freespace 2 but for the demo.
I will say I do admire his brass. If I had a pair like that I'd be a millionaire already.

Another fantastic franchise down the drain? I hope not. The Freespace series is one of my favorites.

For the record, I got BC3000AD imported to Brazil. It cost me *a lot*. Just to find out a buggy mess of a game - good ideas, bad execution.

I'd rather never see a Freespace 3 than to see a DS Freespace 3... anyway, now there's Starshatter to "fill the void" anyway. :-)

That's all you need to know that he WILL fuck up F3. He thinks his games are *good*.

Never mind that -- he thinks people have them installed!!

I'd wish I could have given Derek Smart the benefit of the doubt, but with the way he basically stonewalled any of his detractors (most of whom are the most avid FreeSpace fans you can find) on AVault I wouldn't trust him with the rights to eXtreme Paintbrawl.

Well if Interplay was financially healthy, I'm sure the license would cost a lot. Unfortunately Interplay was in such dire straits that recently they were neither paying their staff nor their rent. Apparently they're still alive, so at least a little money must have turned up from somewhere, but I suspect that if there was ever a time when it was going to be possible to acquire an Interplay license cheaply, this is it.

From now on, whenever I need to say the phrase "the wrong hands" I will replace it with "Derek Smart". He IS the definition of that phrase if I ever saw one.
Lest this weapon fall in the hands of Derek Smart.

Who knew this was going to be the horrible destiny of one of my favorite games of all time.
