Derek Smart and Freespace 3?

A speculative question from 3000 AD's Derek Smart on the Adrenaline Vault Forums (thanks Rake) polls interest in him acquiring the rights to Freespace 3, making the following statements in a pair of posts:
....Derek Smart, yeah, that would be me, got the license from my friends at Interplay (a publisher I had very good experiences with); would you buy Freespace 3 if I made it?

Discuss. Rave. Rant. Argue. But this is something I am seriously considering, given that it looks like Interplay has started off loading properties (starting with Fallout3). I mean, just think. Would you rather see this legacy license fall into the wrong hands?
...
I have already contacted my Interplay contact about it btw.

I've already posted at the Adreneline Vault & HLP, so I won't go into details.

Simply, Derek Smart is the wrong pair of hands for the Freespace license.

So that is a no.

Here's two quotes by Derek Smart. These are funny when you put them back to back:

I do not see anyone else stepping up to purchase the code, so it is most likely that the game would VANISH and NO ONE would play it. Is this what you fools want? Undoubtedly this would be a popular game and despite what any of you say you ARE the minority. Don't forget that.

and here's one to the Freespace community on their boards
How can I forget the group of people who couldn't make Freespace2 a retail success worthy of its effort? Do you REALLY want to go there?

So let's recap. BethSoft won't make fall... oh wait that's the other one. Derek Smart doesn't give a fuck about the freespace fans and therefore is going to make the game to cater to his audience who doesn't care that Universal Combat has an average rating of 51% on Gamerankings.

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/561677.asp?q=universal%20combat

So you know what the answer is Derek? The answer is fuck you. I'd rather see no Freespace 3 than to see it in your hands.

Okay, the fact that he sounds like he has no interest in even talking to the fan-made stuff (and I was impressed by the calibre of their work, Mr. Smart could learn from these guys) pretty much assures that I wouldn't touch this with a million foot pole. Not only that, but he has never to sully firefly while he's at it... damn... this leaves a bitter taste in ones mouth.

Hey Derek,

I’ll decide if I’m going to buy FS3 or not after I read some reviews, so you can go ahead and start making the game.

Let’s see what kind of talent you got behind your ego and leader ship personality.

Good Grief. Pulling a review from a Game from YEARS ago that you all know was the publishers fault in the First place.. Lame...

I really wish most of you people would just grow the frick up.

Universal Combat and Battlecruise Millenium were and just are awesome games. I especially like UC. No other game on the market anywhere offers the completely unique experience that BC/UC does. Its Hard to learn but fun to play. Its not perfect but it is an origional and captivating experience.

Those of you posting one idiodic trash post after the next should do yourself a favor and play UC and actually stick it out, learn the game and find out all the things you can do.

If I DO get it, you and your teenny leetle friends on your Ferrous Oxide project, are effectively, shutdown because I don't piss around when it comes to IP properties. You would do well to ask around. I've sued publishers for less and I have attorneys around the world, literally on speed dial."

Why can't he go screw with some other franchise? Does FreeSpace really need him?

This really makes me cry..
this guy just manages to get under my skin.

Also have this quote from the avault forums:

But as I said above, I would be making a game based on an established franchise. So, I'm well aware of the risks and aggravation involved.

But hey, its either me or it dies. No two ways about it really. And unless you are a die hard space sim fan, this [Freespace 3 game] shouldn't concern you in the very least I don't think. So far, three people have voted that I shouldn't touch it. Makes no difference to me really as I still get to make the games I want to make, regardless

nice..:(

I'm not too optimistic about some of the things this "alpha male", ahem, has said about the FS fan community either. The threat of legal action was particularly amusing, although probably not so for some of the MODders.

Well, there's alot of hostility in the forums, but there always is hostility in forums. I have a feeling that a hypothetical Smart-Freespace project would be a resounding success (by space-shooter standards, anyway)

Frankly I'm dubious about Smart seriously buying up the license. Particularly given the sheer hostility such a decision is meeting right now. Plus if his game track record is anything to go by, I really do not want him defiling one of the great space sim/shooter accomplishments like FreeSpace.

Smart's dealing with the FS fans is classic Derek, belittles all the excellent work that community has put out while praising the absolute garbage he has produced.

But wouldn't you rather someone try to keep it alive? Who knows- he might nail it. And if it sucks, you could just pretend that it never happened (Like I do with the last Matrix movie...)

Hmm, I'd much rather have a game disappear than have it go bad =\ If a franchise dies with a bang, that's good. If it dies through increasingly crappy sequels (ala Tomb Raider), that's a bad thing.

I think it would be great.

I cant belive what happend with that franchise.
Im certain Derek have played the original - and would like to keep to it!

Derek might not have delivered on all acounts, but then again - he DOES strike up a great manny things to do at once.
This game would be rather less complicated than anything else he's worked on.

And he DOES have the entusiasme. Thats the important thing!

Besides - the alternatives. Id rather take the chances with a game gone bad, than a game dissappearing forever.
