Derek Smart and Freespace 3?

A speculative question from 3000 AD's Derek Smart on the Adrenaline Vault Forums (thanks Rake) polls interest in him acquiring the rights to Freespace 3, making the following statements in a pair of posts:
....Derek Smart, yeah, that would be me, got the license from my friends at Interplay (a publisher I had very good experiences with); would you buy Freespace 3 if I made it?

Discuss. Rave. Rant. Argue. But this is something I am seriously considering, given that it looks like Interplay has started off loading properties (starting with Fallout3). I mean, just think. Would you rather see this legacy license fall into the wrong hands?
...
I have already contacted my Interplay contact about it btw.

Well Derek, or whoever you are...

Are you reading?

if I had a choice between never seeing another Freespace and seeing one done by derek, I'd choose NOT to see one.
(that means NO, btw)

I GUARANTEE you that I will NOT buy Freespace 3 if this man makes it. Period.
(NO as well)

Holy Fuck no, Derek Smart, if you are reading this, don't you Fucking Dare.

Definately a NO

I'm for it! Let him have the license. Maybe if he steps away from the Battlecruiser stuff he can come up with something good.

Hey, a YES

No they can't release one of the kick ass Space Simulators to him... Its unethical I tell you.

Bit ambigous, but most likely a NO.

And that's just this page.

As for "As for the mods, of course they HAVE NO RIGHT to exist and cut from the copyright holders profits. No business would succeed that way." ... yeah right, tell that Valve, Epic, id ...

Ignoring the imposter,

Like nin, I was wondering if dsmart was truly behind this. The thread above lends some credence to it.

In a sick, twisted kind of way I hope it happens. Lot's of drama will result.

Derek Smart calls himself a leader. Being a leader implies that you inspire others to follow you. Inspiring others to hate you is not leading.

His website makes some mention about standing apart from the crowd. That is a component of being a leader but standing apart from the crowd so you can stand in a corner banging your head against the wall most certainly isn't.

Chairman Mao also called himself a leader.

Stephens "date" is even more current and mine is just under three months away...

I hear you Ray... I've done more greiving lately than I had in a while. That such a painful process is so drawn-out can really take its toll.

As always, however, there are so many joyous thoughts associated with my mom that there are more and more times that I can consider her life in a happy perspective. I can only hope that the pain can slip further into the background behind those cherished memories as time goes on.

Whatever happens, I'll never stop missing her though. Since I wouldn't want to, that makes whatever pain this carries a little easier to bear.

You have my sympathies. As Dan Rather once said: Courage!

Edit (it is wonky lately, but if you reload enough it works) - Sorry for getting all heavy here.

If derek smart does Freespace 3, then they will have put the final nail in the coffin for the franchise. Freespace 1 and 2 ROCKED. "dr." smart does not have the talent do do it justice, nor can he get past his huge ego. He listens to no one, and if you post even a HINT of negativity on "his boards" he goes on a power trip and bans you from them. Well derek, you can't ban here and you'll have to deal with the ugly truth - YOUR GAMES ARE TERRIBLE, and you are an arrogant, self-centered, self-absorbed, narcissistic, delusional, egotistic bastard.

I GUARANTEE you that I will NOT buy Freespace 3 if this man makes it. Period.

Um, what's the record for longest Blue's thread ever?
Just wondering...

BTW, I just reinstalled FS2 and added the open source "mod" (Or whatever a new source code thing should be called).

It's pretty sweet, and damnit, now I know who should get the license - Valve! They should just hire some of these great fans full-time, and save us from DS.

What if the poster over @ AV isn't really DS? The sig says 449 posts, but didn't register until last fall...the DS on that board (from the first 4-5 posts I've read) seems WAY too nice. Almost asskissing...

edit:
quote 1
But if I needed to get in touch with anyone who ever touched Freespace franchise at a professional level, I'll look up the Volition guys first. Then work my way down the line. Its the respectful thing to do.

quote 2
If I get the Freespace license to make Freespace 3, I'm going to do the best that I can because I have far too much respect for the franchise

Does this sound like DS?

Since this is brought up, guess its time to fire up FS2 and play that again and remember how good games where made back in the day.

There's only one conclusion to draw from this: Derek Smart is higher acclaimed than Doom 3 itself!

but what if the gamers actually took up a collection bought the Freespace franchise and made it open source? Or something like that however it may be called?

Anything just as long as it doesn't fall into the hands of Derek Smart.

It's being discussed - http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=c6601fa88c96cc50405ac0c23f60ebfb&threadid=25177

financially, it's highly unlikely anything could come from it - but it illustrates just how little confidence there is in Mr. Smart to develop a 'worthy' Freespace game.

There is already a substantial effort being made in modifying the FS2 engine to modern standards, and also planning towards making a new - from scratch - freeware 'sequel'.
