Derek Smart and Freespace 3?

A speculative question from 3000 AD's Derek Smart on the Adrenaline Vault Forums (thanks Rake) polls interest in him acquiring the rights to Freespace 3, making the following statements in a pair of posts:
....Derek Smart, yeah, that would be me, got the license from my friends at Interplay (a publisher I had very good experiences with); would you buy Freespace 3 if I made it?

Discuss. Rave. Rant. Argue. But this is something I am seriously considering, given that it looks like Interplay has started off loading properties (starting with Fallout3). I mean, just think. Would you rather see this legacy license fall into the wrong hands?
...
I have already contacted my Interplay contact about it btw.

It's a shame that all of you are avoiding answering the question

It's a shame that you can't even read. I specifically stated in my first post that, NO, I would not buy ANYTHING from you.

Is this what you fools want?

Learn to read first, then start calling someone else a fool.
What I WANT is to get a true sequel to Freespace 2. But there are many things I want, and few of them I will get. I can live with never getting a Freespace 3.

What I do NOT want is to see yet another treasured franchise being dragged into the fucking muck, which undoubtedly is what you'd do with it. What are YOUR plans for Freespace 3, Smart? Modelling the interior of the ships? Having 300 playable classes, 185 billion different battlezones, simulating an entire galactic war, and the player has to play the part of every soldier in the galaxy?
I mean, with you, God only knows WHAT the fuck you'd come up with.

And it would undoubtedly be followed by no tech support, and you bitching at the people that buy your games that they are too stupid to understand them.

You're like a bad smell, you just won't go away.

So yet again I ask the question. Would you buy Freespace 3? YES OR NO

Developed by you? No. You have experience in making space sims, thats the only pro for having 3000AD and Derek Smart at the helm of Freespace 3.

Were Volition to acquire the license I'd pick up the game in an instant. If Totally Games acquired the license I'd buy the game in an instant. If any half-way competent dev, even one without experience in the space combat genre, acquired the license I'd buy the game in an instant.

Until you learn some of the absolute basics of game design, namely that it is better to do a few things well than it is do do many things poorly, and evaluate, analyze and learn from the failure of your previous games I will not purchase one of your products.

Go ahead and lecture me on how I've never published a game. I'm sure it is quite difficult to do but the degree to which you ignore common sense gives anyone the right to say you need to either learn from your mistakes or leave the industry.

[To Derek]
I would not purchase FreeSpace 3.

Pursuing the FreeSpace license is a waste of time unless you can figure out why FS2 tanked... and this was despite the rave reviews from the press. Personally I thought the game had good but not great production values compared to the WC series, which is why I never bought into it. The WC series on the other hand got quite redundant and dare I say boring.

Seriously, wouldn't your time be better spent working on a X2/Freelancer/Elite style game instead?

It's a shame that all of you are avoiding answering the question. All you seem to be able to do is toss the usual insults without saying anything of any value. So I would remind you again of the question. WOULD YOU PURCHASE FREESPACE 3.

I do not see anyone else stepping up to purchase the code, so it is most likely that the game would VANISH and NO ONE would play it. Is this what you fools want? Undoubtedly this would be a popular game and despite what any of you say you ARE the minority. Don't forget that.

As for the mods, of course they HAVE NO RIGHT to exist and cut from the copyright holders profits. No business would succeed that way.

So yet again I ask the question. Would you buy Freespace 3? YES OR NO

I'm very doubtful this is Derek. First off thats not his regular nick here. 2nd this sentence
As for the mods, of course they HAVE NO RIGHT to exist and cut from the copyright holders profits. No business would succeed that way.
is pure inflammatory crap. Even Derek isn't that dense.

Don't be played like a violin guys, theres a small army that lurks wherever derek posts just for the entertainment value of prodding him like a ferret in a cage with a stick.

Maybe we should start a different petition:
“Dear Derek Smart,
Please do not attempt to obtain the Freespace franchise or intellectual property.”
I wonder how many people would sign it?

A lot of people would.

However the following petition would get even more signatures.

“Dear Derek Smart,
Please - Go away....forever.”

While most here have not directly answered the question, the indirect answer is quite clear, Derek. Would I buy Freespace 3? Yes. Would I buy it if you made it? Not a chance. I've tried all of the Battlecruisers and Universal Combat. None of them held any interest for me and most managed to piss me off just in the menus alone before I even got to PLAYING the game.

Freespace is an arcade-style space sim franchise like the Wing Commander's back in the day and I highly doubt you have any interest in maintaining that. My recommendation, if you already have the rights is to sit on it and look for a different development studio that wants to buy it from you. Bump the price up from what you paid, make a few bucks and let someone that is actually interested in making a real Freespace game create it.

Derek, don't be obtuse. You know the question isn't that simple. The answer, of course, is: it depends on how it turns out. Only fanbois buy based on a title alone.

Thus, the real answer to your question... if you developed it, I would lay odds of about 500:1 that I would find it irritating, bug-ridden and a colossal waste of the license. So, for me the answer is very likely to be "NO." Or, at least, "NOT FROM YOU."

Plus, you make it sound like you're the lone white knight. The only shining hope for the franchise. Except it's not like it's even officially on the block... as you yourself mentioned elsewhere, Interplay has started selling properties.

I would rather you leave it alone, in hopes of a developer I have more faith in picking it up.

Jeff

Valve thinks otherwise.

Would I buy it? Well, now that I know you are involved...no. Not a chance in hell. No offense, but you sir, are an ass. I have no intentions of "funding" your continued existence in the gaming world.

I was hoping the title of this news article referred to an unanimous vote by humanity to jetison your body into free space forever...oh well.

Good luck with it though.

For the love of the game, let the franchise die. You have to give credit that when a MAJORITY of the gaming community, let alone 98% of die-hard Freespace fan base does NOT approve of you making the game. I understand you don't care if we approve or not, but damn.

I know you have the *possibility* of actually making a good game, but there's no guarantee, and, given your previous record, far from it. With chances of the Freespace franchise being reborn and as a *possible* result Freespace 4+ on the horizon, why would anyone want to place faith in you carrying that out?

Here's the deal Derek. I'd buy the game if you did a good job. Problem is, you won't. You never have, and never will. Call me immature for saying that, but I'm just acknowledging your shitty track record.

You know the gaming community doesn't want you fucking with this game, so why do you keep asking?

If 3000AD Inc develops it: HELL NO

" Would you buy Freespace 3? YES OR NO"

Would I buy it?

If it was made as well as or better than Freespace 2 in terms of story line, graphics, and game play features (particularly multiplayer features) then yes, I'd buy it. If it was made in the same vein as the Battlecruiser series - then no, I wouldn't touch it. Poor graphics, clunky interface, lack of manuals, and other items have held back the BC series. It's a fine concept, but the BC series always seems to fall short of its potential. FS2 did an excellent job of improving on the popular elements of FS1 while remaining true to the story arc and feel of the first game. Seeing FS3 done as a 'knocked together product' to make a quick buck based on the FS series name would NOT make me a happy fan.
