Hehe.. maybe I should change my name again to "LHJ" (the initials, not what it stands for) and throw you guys for a loop again...

Or you could add this to your sig - TPFKALHJ.

Hmm, the easiest way to prevent hijackware from infecting you is to simply turn off ActiveX

That'd be nice except for the various flaws in IE that lets you run ActiveX scripts even if it's turned "off".

There is no way to completely disable ActiveX if you are using IE.

Frankly, I use IE for Windows Update and nothing else. I don't even recall the last website that had a problem with Firefox.

I have never had Active X enabled and I still have gotten CoolWebSearch browser hijack.

But KUDOS to CWShredder for being the only thing out there that helped me to get rid of it.

In those rare instances where you actually need to have a site install something (like Quicktime or Flash), just turn ActiveX back on. A simple solution to an annoying problem =0

This is sad news....that program has helped me before, and helped less tech-savvy friends of mine more times than I can count on 9 fingers.

*notes yet another IE flaw*

Makes me want to buy another copy of Opera, just because I can't give it a hug right now.;)

And if Windows SP2 turns out to be a major hose-job i'll be dumping that too. grrrgrrr

Well don't plan on grabbing it when it first comes out, then...I always wait at least 6 months on service packs...

Yeah after 8 years of no viruses but constant uncertainty and dicking around with turning off this/that/the other 'security' settings, i'm fed up with the hassle of IE. But what's worst is that after 8+ fking y-e-a-r-s MS is STILL unwilling/unable to actually FIX the underlying problem(s). Unacceptable by ANY standard.

And if Windows SP2 turns out to be a major hose-job i'll be dumping that too. grrrgrrr

I love Microsoft! I always have and always will! Everything they make is great! If they make it then it will look nice and work great. I'm glad Micosoft is a monopoly and I would gladly give my life for them. Everything they make they they are the best at. I am going to put Windows in my will. I would take a 50hour work week without pay if it meant I could call myself a Microsoft employee. You MS haters are Nazi Facists!

I would guess that you started looking thru the photos on the site.

Actually, I didn't. I just remembered LHJ having an interest in astronomy, looked at the skyscrapers site and it clicked.

Now I know....the rest of the story.

Yes, I once posted under that name. It used to be my Quake name (I usually went by "Jim", but there were so many other Jims on the servers that I played so I used long-haired Jim to distinguish myself so my friends knew whether it was me or not). Since I haven't played Quake in ages I just changed my Blues username back to "Jim"

No kiddin...I wondered what happened to LHJ, as I hadn't seen a post in awhile...

That, and we really did have someone posting here named LongHairJim, or some version of it! Was that not you?

And, was that just bad lighting in the picture I saw of you (J.H right?)
Or do you really die your hair silver?

Its not bad lighting, and not dyed either. Its natural.

I'm also considering putting a UA detect for IE on a website that I run to inform users of the security risks of using IE.

I browsed to the page you link to in your user profile. Are you 'longhairjim'?

Why do I think that used to be your username?

This one is pretty serious. Serious to the point that I'm telling my family to stop using IE- and I usually don't dole out unsolicited tech advice to my family unless someone asks me for it.

I'm also considering putting a UA detect for IE on a website that I run to inform users of the security risks of using IE.

Microsoft is screwed- and if this episode doesn't put a serious dent in the percentage of people still using IE, then we're all screwed.
