Ships Ahoy - Perimeter

Codemasters sends word that Perimeter, KD-LAB's terraforming RTS game, is now available in North America:
New York, N.Y. – (June 29, 2004) – Codemasters, a leading global publisher of interactive entertainment, announced today the company’s groundbreaking real time strategy game, Perimeter, has shipped to North American retail outlets. Developed in Russia by 1C Company and KD-LAB, Perimeter is now available exclusively for PC/DVD-ROM.

Through a science fiction ambience, Perimeter challenges players in a race to acquire energy and create new homes for themselves in a newly discovered galaxy. The game brings fresh ideas to the real time strategy genre through several game play features, including strategic terraforming to acquire resources. With this feature, players can manipulate the game’s landscape to extract energy, expand a civilization base, increase covered territory and limit opponent options. In turn, energy extraction provides power to units, buildings and protective force shields, making energy management and environmental awareness key components to game play success. In addition, Perimeter’s use of a feature called nanomorph technology allows units to be transformed into different strategic elements directly on the battlefield. Teamed with a wealth of missions, structure types, maps and factions, Perimeter delivers unparalleled tactical opportunities ready for adaptation in any game play situation.

If it takes three hours and I STILL don't know how to play it, it's a poor product. It's Seven Kingdoms type bad.

I have a friend who played the European version about a month ago. He thinks it's one of the best RTS games he's ever played. Yes, it's definitely not that good looking (but graphics don't make a good game) and it's very hard. You do unfortunately have to like some degree of pain to really appreciate this game. But it's nice to see an RTS that isn't just all numbers, numbers, numbers (i.e. every C&C game) and actually requires you to use your brain and provides a play mechanic that you have to strategize to do well at. Unfortunately, I'm also pretty sure the game won't do well for this reason because most lemming-gamers prefer to just build more than the other guys in order to win.

I run a dual 2.8 ghz rig with HT and checked or unchecked it still didn't run that well. Got the single player demo. Told me all I wanted to know. Even with easy AI it was horribly hard to advance. Once the AI has howitzers you can't build any closer.. and you can't attack because of their quadrillion base defences.. then they turn on shields. I dunno. I didn't like the fact that you had about half an inch to build on for each power thing. So you had to build fifty thousand of them just to get a decent base going. It's definitally a builders game. Think I'll stick with Generals ZH.. maybe i'll try GC2.

It's okay. Personally I'm having alot more fun with GC2 than this game. Unfortunately though, the computer that can run this game well and make it look really nice has yet to be invented yet.

Anyone pick this up yet? Seems kind of interesting in the video but I can't tell how much is gameplay and how much is intro CGI.
