Windows XP Game Advisor

A new version of the Windows XP Games Advisor is now available: "Windows XP users now have a start-to-finish solution that makes it easy to find the most interesting games for your PC and determine if your PC can play them. Look at screenshots, watch trailers, try a free demo and then order the game online -- all with the knowledge that your PC is ready to play."

...for I am bitter! Anyway...

Er...is this a news post giving us the same information that is on the advertisement that repeatedly shows up on the site?!?

Having no wish to ever use the advisor,
Ray

I wish Microsoft would just STICK to making opertating systems and less time developing pointless programs like Game Advisor. I think everyone can read system requirements on the box. We don't need Windows saying "this will run but this won't".

Sorry, just my rant for today

Kinda a conflict of interest since they make games as well.

Well it's funny since it's like they want to convey the message that Windows is the "OS for the serious gamer" or some crap like that. Of course, everyone who is a serious gamer uses Windows (even if they have to boot into it from their Linux session).

Is this advisor made by the same Microsoft that said this 4 days ago while recommending gaming PCs:

Multithreading technology. Have you ever wondered how a game can feature cars racing, while sounds play, sunlight sparkles, and birds fly by? When software demands that the computer process several different elements at once within the application itself, the processor can only manage so much data simultaneously. Multithreading technology in Windows XP and the Pentium 4 opens multiple channels for processing many different types of data at the same time. When referring to its latest Pentium 4 processors, Intel calls multithreading technology Hyper-Threading (HT).

They also mention that the "best PCs" are 3.0Ghz (which is the most important part of a gaming PC - memory size is 2nd, and video memory size is 3rd)

just to play devils advocate, but really this game advisor thing is not really aimed at u guys, more aimed at the semi-serious-not-too-technical-guy-who-wants-to-play-games, its a neat idea which may well help boost not only higher end pc sales, but also boost overall pc games sales which is always a good thing for the industry.

I love Microsoft. I always have and always will. Everything they make is great! it looks nice and works great. I'm glad Micosoft is a monopoly and I would gladly give my life for them.

It's actually kinda neat... It doesn't just say "Yup you can run it." It shows how well you can run it compared with the minimum, recommended, and you plotted on a graph. I guess ti was neat for me because of my AMD 64 3200, my Radeon 9800XT and my 1.25GB Corsair DDR400 RAM. The latest game I have been playing is Far Cry, so curious as I was I type it and find that my PC is good to go on Far Cry by quite a ways on the graph.

It can't even identify that my video card isn't DX9. It told me I have a great system for Painkiller (The demo was a few steps above a slideshow) and that I should have no trouble running Thief 3 (minimum DX9 and I have a GeForce 440MX). I'm surprised too, since Futuremark seems to be behind it.

I did a google search for "Windows XP Game Advisor Spyware" and, much to my suprise, this is not spyware.

Then I went to the link and saw it required Internet Explorer... d'oh!

Heh, hope that was sarcasm. Microsoft has put out some cool stuff but imho, they should stick with what they first started out doing. The whole, Game Advisor idea or even the XBox idea is just, not them. Thank you, come again.

Bells and whistles and plot charts are fine, but let's not lose sight of what this really is: a single and highly-controlled channel through which game information is relayed to the user. Should anyone come to rely on something like Game Advisor, they will know only what they are told. To be fair, there'll be a host of options for them to choose from, I have no doubt of that (as anyone with the latest, greatest game rig usually does), but they will be artificially limited. Microsoft would have no incentive whatsoever to inform you of anything that does not benefit them directly.

I'm not raging against MS when I say this; I would honestly make the same criticism of any company who would contemplate this, whether they're iD, Valve, GameSpy, Blizzard, NCSoft, IGN, whoever.
