Star Wars Galaxies Diary

The Star Wars Galaxies Website offers Cinco Barnes' Letter to the Community (thanks Frans) as the lead designer on the upcoming Jump to Lightspeed expansion for Star Wars Galaxies shares his enthusiasm for the project:
I can't wait for you to know the feeling I had the first time I flew through the Naboo system and wove my TIE fighter through the merchant lanes. Or the first time I sat in the X-wing cockpit and looked over my shoulder to see my droid looking back at me. For that matter, the first time I flew through a nebula and saw blinding cords of electricity ripping through the clouds.

From every indication, this is the game I want to play. I just need to know a few things:

- I remember in SWG that i would sit on a chair and then 10 seconds later, it would "adjust" my character's position by 5 feet and i'd be sitting on nothing. Is this going to be fixed or are the tie fighters going to fly around and warp?
- From most articles I've read (both the PCGamer ones, at least), they say that supposedly you can get ships and fly for the alliance/empire pretty easily. I dunno if this will be part of that bs rank points though.

I dunno. I'm sure I'll be a sucker and pick it up and try it again. I have little or no desire to play the land portion though, so you're going to have a bunch of dedicated 'non-ground' players if it turns out that this is good, because i'm sure i'm not the only one who doesn't want to go back to playing the original buggy grind portion again.

SWG's budget was larger than all those others combined. It had more people working on it than all the others combined. Many devs say time and budget constraints forced them to make tradeoffs--SWG can't claim that. They've got the money still to make it better, yet many people say it isn't.

WWIIOL is still around 3 years after launch. It may only have 15,000 people total, but they seem able to survive on that.

SWG would collapse if it had less than 75,000 I'd think.

Rigs, I was referring to financial success and potential, not "launches or releases." Don't question how long I have been playing games either you dipfuck, because I have been a gamer all my life.

Hey, you can suck SWG's dick all you want. Be my guest. But the fact remains that SWG should have been the most successfuly profitable game to come along since Everquest, which by the way has made far more money than any of the games you just listed.

SWG fell far short of financial expectations, and no amount of fan boi'sm can change that fact.

Eve takes a lot of work before you get to the fun. Basically you need to mine for a couple of months before you can build up enough of a bank roll to PvP - but then it's a lot of fun.

SWG still makes me bitter. On a surface level it has everything I ever wanted in a game - except some form of entertainment. Even now, I feel drawn to it - like a moth circling a 250w bug zapper. So beautiful...ZAP!!

Maybe you should get yourself checked for A.D.D. But them, you fit the typical profile of people these days... cheap and instant gratification is what you are looking for.

Oh, so I can have my opinion but then you personally attack me over it? God, what a total fucking dork you are.

Seriously, nothing in the history of gaming rivals the commercial dissapointment and squandered potential that is SWG.

"Most of the posters here are negative and like to bitch. I have fun with it and so do 500K of subscribers and the 120K+ a day that play." - Narcis

Uh try 35k on a weekend, tough guy. SWG could have eventually made tens of millions of dollars, but it was overhyped and implemented poorly. I remember when John Smedley quipped "SWG will be the first MMO with 1 million Subscribers in the USA!" Um, no.

You have to build a game, you know those things with gameplay. A fucking glorified chat room just does not cut it.

Seriously, nothing in the history of gaming rivals the commercial dissapointment and squandered potential that is SWG.

What is sad about it? You are welcome to your opinion. The game starts off slow when you are only in it for 4 hours. Frankly, you can't even begin to comprehend all that is going on in the game in 4 days. Maybe you should get yourself checked for A.D.D. But them, you fit the typical profile of people these days... cheap and instant gratification is what you are looking for. It's sad, really.

You can see how many are logged on when you login

Not anymore. They changed that long ago to hide it from their "competition" from what a GM told me.

Listen, you liberal fascist sonofabitch...You can see how many are logged on when you login. Duh! It has nothing to do with 'fluffed up' numbers...

Yep, I also Beta Tested Eve Online:The Second Sleeping. Sorry Rigs, the game is boring as hell

Indeed, I was also in the beta, one of the first ones picked, actually. I have the cd's to prove it. I was also in the SWG beta AND the Earth & Beyond beta (became one of the 'Founders' also)...but Eve was the only one that kept my interest, tho E&B was pretty good until all the punks showed up. I couldn't care less about 'fantasy'-themed MMO's, I've never been interested in anything like them, so when there was a spat of space-sim MMO's, I jumped on it like a lion on a wilderbeast. Obviously, it's not for everyone but if you like the single-player space-sims of old, then it's a worthy addition...it'd better to have it as a choice then to not have it at all (kinda like it's better to have loved and lost then to have never loved at all)...

CoH has strategy? Maybe a little, but Tic-Tac-Toe also has a little strategy, and guess what, it blows.

you obviously never played the game past lvl 2.

To each is own. But people talk smack about paying $15.00 a month yet buy a new single player game every 2 weeks at $50.00 a pop cause the one they were just playing got stale. Same shit different packaging.

The kiddies who bitch about what other people play don't pay for their games, they download them, play them, and THEN bitch about the game. lol That's probably why you see so many idiots bitching about mmog's... they're too cheap to pay for them so they base the game on beta feedback. You know, all the "I was in the beta" bullshitters. ;-)
