Unofficial Freelancer Patch

Lancers Reactor now offers downloads of an unofficial patch for Freelancer, a fan-created update for Digital Anvil's space sim. The update addresses a few long-standing problems, and word is: "All modders are encouraged to use this package. You are allowed to use it as a whole or parts in your mods. If you’ve already edited system files in place, the detailed information makes it very easy to patch your own system files on the fly." Thanks Frans.

It may be another 10 years before we see a space game

Please. X2 sold very well according to Ego, well enough for them to make both an expansion, AND are 'committed' to X3, although I think their X-Online idea is getting more focus (which is undeserved, but oh well).

You may not like X, but it's definitely a space game. Some good things are in the works for patch 1.4 and they have promising ideas for the Xpansion.

Dude I have X2 and its great, when did I ever say it wasnt?
I said we may not see another space game in 10 years. I did not know they are making X3, if they do I will buy it. anyways....

Sweet, thanks MacD. I for one was too lazy to keep hunting for more than five minutes...and it doesn't help that the starshatter demo is quickly eating away at other, more important, aspects of my life.

That sounded damn interesting Hobby...I just wish you'd also included a link. It took me quite a while top find what I needed to find on the SCP. So here, for those lazier than I

if you get Freespace 2, make sure you download the freespace 2 source code project updates. It makes FS2 into a much better game

Yeah, FS2 rocks, the only space sims that come close are TIE Fighter and Independence War 1 and 2.

Funny how there are so many posts in a thread about space sims - hey, maybe there's a market out there for them after all!

then moving to Freespace 2 (which I never played before)

Man! Are you in for a treat...I think FS2 was the best space sim ever (narrowly beating Tie Fighter). All those cap ships you see in FS now? They'll have Death-Star type lasers on them in FS2. You'll be in the middle of a dog fight and all of a sudden these huge laser beams come shooting past you...

Having been on the DevNet roster for X since the early days (when it was not much more than a tech demo from some indie developer), I can say that X has come a long way. Hell, grab the original rolling demo, if you can find it. Quite a difference from X2. I've always loved space-sims and sims in general. Freespace is still the top in the linear, plot driven space shooter. Always will be, I think. The story was good enough for a movie , for sure. X2 is a worthy successor to the beloved space-sims to come before it and hopefully will carry the torch far into the future, all alone in the night...

WHAT? You mean they changed the controls to some that actually suit even people with more than an IQ of 20? Holy Cow for sure!

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

Freelancer just missed the mark: great graphics, but the game itself was just a bit too limited. Not in where you could go...you could go anywhere in the game, and the modsquad created loads of extra, interesting missions. It's the actual game mechanics which made the game fall far short of it's mark. It could have seriously been the next Elite, if only you could have capitol ships, if the planetside gig was slightly more extensive, if you could buy/build your own stations, if the non-plot missions where more interesting (instead of afterburn to there, kill guy/wave of guys, return), if the main story line wasn't too short and didn't go from slow buildup to a certain point where you had to fly six or seven plot missions and end the game without being able to privateer a bit inbetween and if the plotline took you over more of the universe, if the wepons where a bit more diverse etc etc etc. I'd have more points only I'm drunk and can't remember the more poignant thoughts I had when playing the game.

Coulda been great...thank the mod squad for extending something which was nearly great. Too bad though...with such a great engine, a half year more woulda made it perfect. And no joystick...WTF!

Funny how I'm seeing all of this, since I finally bought my first joystick the other day (after 10+ years of gaming). Am busy playing through Freespace and Silent Threat, then moving to Freespace 2 (which I never played before). Also been playing around with IL-2. Think I'll give Starshatter and X2 a whirl now....but damn, I need more time to play games!

Hmm. Do I play Freespace, or play poker with my buddies tonight? It's a scary day when I actually have to think about it.

I've stopped playing it because, well, after you've acquired pretty much everything there is to acquire, it tends to get rather boring. The opposition is way too easily taken care of. If an M3 fighter can already kill everything in the universe, why bother getting a corvette, or even a 200 million credits capship? (other than the coolness of having one)

Still, I played it for about 9 weeks, and it was good fun.

It may be another 10 years before we see a space game. What happened to the time of Wing commander games coming out almost every year w/ 2 expansion packs, Privateer and its one expansion pack and selling really good. Freelancer was good but too short, they really needs like an expansion pack to add another 13-20+ missions and newer even more powerful ships/weapons.

Disappointing overhyped uninspired crap.

They couldn't do better (do better? They couldn't even come close) than a title that came out nearly 10 years prior. If you can't guess which... well, feel free to go ahead and enjoy Freelancer.

Great game but like Hunter said the same speed for everything made travelling a bum. I got myself a Titan though which i was quite happy about but exploring was too much of a hassle really. Also not having a garage was quite annoying.

It really was fun, but I wanted something closer to Morrowind in terms of continuity. The gameplay didn't build enough to encourage me to explore, and there was plenty to explore.

Another game that if open sourced to the community could have some real potential for fun.

A pox on the poxer, ye poxy pox in socks. I hated Freelancer.

Starshatter is definitely better on the more realistic settings, and seems very stable. Unfortunately, the demo doesn't have any voices, and I'm hoping that will be changed in the final version - it would really help the immersion. Some pixel shaders would also help.

The Glide wrapper for Independence War is over at http://home.t-online.de/home/zsack/glide_wrapper/index.html, by the way.
